Great point on the topic of trail conservancy. @paflytyer anf I will discuss what we can do on that front. The idea of a raffle item or adding the ability to opt in for a donation during registration is a great idea. Thx

Greenies are trying their best to to the same here as well. Millions of acres have been closed , and millions more are at risk. Thankfully lots of positive support from several types of user groups fight a good fight to keep our access open, but it's shrinking.

Which brings one of my thoughts/suggestions for HIH8 and beyond- we need to make a priority of visibly/collectively giving something back for the trails we impact during our week, in the way of a $ donation either as part of our registration commitment, or an auction and proceeds provided to an agreed upon advocate like Sharetrails/Blueribbon Coalition for example. As I watched thousands of $$ in giveaways that were provided by many generous vendors, it occurred to me there was a missed opportunity; that we should be auctioning some of the larger ticket items off to raise funds for the organization(s) who fight for and support our rights to enjoy the trails in our favorite motorized obsession. If the greenies had their way we might be riding donkeys in the hills in 10 years.

HIH7 was a new adventure for me. For years I had been exploring the Rockies myself with a couple of friends. I wasn't sure how I would feel being packed into an organized meadow with 100 other vehicles or how two guys were going to orchestrate the movement of so many people.

Before the event started, I ventured up Yankee Boy Basin and Governors Basin. Here the Ouray County road crews were finishing up clearing the Camp Bird Rd rock slide. The road crews throughout the San Juans are really the unsung hero's out there. Without them, most of the trails we all love would be closed and impassable. THANK YOU! Made it up to the base of Mount Sneffles. Wow, what a spectacular site! I then tried to go up Governors Basin, but was blocked by a snow field on the shelf road so I ventured up Sydney Basin and was blown away with the alpine tundra's flower bloom. This rarely traveled road also required me to use the rear locker....

Then HIH took off. It was nice to see so many different builds at HIH. It was a nice change from the Jeep JK's I usually see out here (no offence Crux ;)) The Kendall Mountain camp was great and I slept great, with the exception for the person who sawed logs a few camp sites over every night...

Day 1 of the HIH was the Alpine Loop guided by @nakman. Thanks Tim! Here we are parked atop Engineer. Check out all of those awesome Cruisers!

Day 2 of HIH was a trek down Black Bear guided by @xlcaferacer. I don't know how many times Josh ran back up the swtchbacks to spot folks, but just thinking about that makes me tired. Many thanks for the dynamite history and botany lessen, even though I didn't recognize some of the nomenclature... like 'miners socks'.

My last day of HIH was led, once again, by the one and only @nakman. We ran the 'Gulches' in the craziest fog I have ever seen in the San Juans. Lake Como was quite the sight in the fog. Nobody did the Polar Plunge today.

Thanks all. I had a great time at my first HIH and first ever organized event.

This was our first Hundreds in the Hills and we had an amazing time! My wife and son both loved it and want to go back next year. Seeing all the upgrades possible to the 100 series was awesome and has given my some inspiration on what mods I want to do.

Day 3 was Blackbear. This was by far my favorite trail. It was challenging and beautiful.

Who had the drone flying around camp? I know @bluecruiser had his there and hopefully you will upload some footage and give us the link Chris. If anyone else has drone footage, can you please let us all know so we can see it?

Also, the same thing for all the GoPro footage that was taken!

Thanks guys!

Aaron, that might have been Ramathorn15. He does some drone videos and pictures in his posts.

I've got a little sorting to do after getting this many photos off the camera. Also working on a story/report/article about our whole experience. I'll post it up when I get it finished.

Here is a GoPro Video from Black Bear on Thursday. I missed a few sections due to running out of battery and operator error.
This is in HD 1080 so you go fullscreen and kick up the resolution. There is no sound and the video is all speeded up 1.5X to improve flow.

I'd expect better tech skills from a Intel guy.

If you're on instagram, checkout @owl_expedition. I've been posting shots from the trip that I'm pulling from the video I'm editing. I'm hoping to have it done tonight, ready to share tomorrow.

@AimCOtaco heading off into the foggy Abyss of Black Bear...

That's a cool shot, it felt about as foggy as it looks there. At least it made it easy to focus on driving the steps instead of the drop below them.

Following your lead and all the fog made Black Bear very passable that day! When I asked Jess if she was ever scared, she said, "Of what?" lol

This is just after the steps and first couple of switchbacks on Black Bear - some of our group was still in the water crossing.

Clear behind us, fog ahead

Milo wasn't happy with the pace of our group on the Alpine Loop, so he decided to take matters into his own hands and meet us at the bottom :)
