is it me or does he look like Bert Kreischer?
YES! I was thinking that as I was going through this!

is it me or does he look like Bert Kreischer?
My injury, long hospital stay and even longer rehab have opened my eyes to what it means to have true friends. It was this community that offered us more support and love than any other group of friends or family. Many of you were in the hospital to see me, sent texts, emails or phone calls and even more importantly, reached out to my wife to see if you could help in any way. Many of you are probably tired of hearing it, but less than two years ago, I was in a wheelchair. Driving a Land Cruiser was never far from my mind, but standing and walking again were priority number one for me. If the hand that I was dealt happened to be a bust, I know I'd have a group of friends willing to lift me out of a wheelchair and into an open seat at every HIH to come. Fortunately, I got lucky. I turned over a few aces and worked hard to get on my feet and learn how to put one foot in front of the other again. HIH6 was great, but I was still a long way from being right and I just couldn't enjoy it like I wanted to. HIH7 had me almost feeling like my old self again. Thank you all for the lifelong friendships I've made through this event. It's special beyond just being an event. It allows me to shake hands, high-five and hug some very important people in my life and I'm grateful beyond the words typed here. You know who you are. From Louisiana to Texas to Cali to Colorado... friends are friends.
Looking back, I wish I would've spent more time walking camp and introducing myself to other attendees and talking with the vendors. Everyone I did get a chance to hang out with was awesome and there were so many nice 100s to check out.
Damn these pics! I have to find a way to make it to the next HIH.
Wow, you guys have some stunning scenery over there in the US. Those trails are so narrow in places, over here anything like that would be closed off due to the Greenies.
Keep the pictures coming.
What can I say.....HIH7 was beyond what I had imagined that this event would be this year. A+++
My family and I love this event. many like minded, great friends. My wife Kateri and our daughter Jadyn look forward to this event each and every year.
We spent most of the weekend prior to leaving packing, sorting, making sure we had everything we needed. I travel a ton for work so my time to prep this year was very very limited. The Monday before the event we were well sorted and ready to roll. We did our final packing grabbing ice before we departed on Tuesday later afternoon to meet up with @nakman & @AimCOtaco We stayed in Fairplay for the night and would head out in the morning for Silverton.
Upon arrival into Silverton the first thing we noticed was the banner....both my daughter and I were "Ugh...that's nice, what happened to last years banner, this looks simple and thrown together".

We arrived into base camp at Kendall Mtn and were greeted by @B-RAD who showed us where we could set up camp. We got to our spot and the 3 of us begin to set up our camps. The weather was great! We set up and walked around shorty to see who was in attendance. There were A LOT of new faces this year! AWESOME!
After setting up camp we headed down to the opening night event sponsored by @just differentials , Carl a long time HIH sponsor. This was a great time to catch up, see who was at the event and enjoy some great drinks and food. Well done Carl! Thank you!
Thursday morning we woke up , made some breakfast in the cool, brisk CO Mtn air that my family and I truly love. We were headed out today to drive a new trail to HIH, The Gulches, led by Steve, while we've done parts of this trail in past years, it as amazing still. Great views, a glimpse of what the wildflowers in bloom would be like at higher altitude.

The thing with HIH is getting to meet new people, make new connections , reconnecting with old friends and reinforcing great friendships. When we stopped at a mine site for lunch, we all parked, got our lunches set up. During that time, I was parked near Steve, our trail leader for the day. I was talking to my wife about a gentlemen I worked with at Level 3, a broadband provider. Steve asks if I was a level 3 employee. We had a discussion about that, I explained that I had worked for another broadband carrier, The Zayo Group. We'll if you believe in 6 degrees of separation, I can tell you its getting far closer than that. To my surprise Steve's wife was also an Ex-Zayoite. We had a good, funny, serious, frank discussion about our time there and how small the Telecom world is.

We were doing Poughkeepsie Gulch and Corkscrew today, led by my great friend @bluecruiser In addition there were several people on this trail that I've gotten pretty close to over the last few years. @smakee @AimCOtaco @paflytyer @IHScoutII75 @ENGINE er This was shaping up to be an epic s*** show. LOL
I've been looking forward to this day for weeks. You will hear this over and over, as its very important to this event, SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! Between HIH6 & HIH7 I made some changes/additions to my truck. This year I bite the bullet, after winning a GC to Nitro Gears/Just Differentials last year at HIH6. I regeared my truck to 4.88's and also added Front/rear TJM air lockers, ARB Twin compressor to make it all work. Thank you @just differentials I also added a 50qt Doemetic fridge and fridge slide to my existing ARB Outback drawers from Gamaviti, @nakman
Back to Thursday trail, Poughkeepsie Gulch. We were ready for The Wall, a few years back we tried to ascend but traffic backed up and by the time the trail was clear it had rained and made the wall impossible to ascend. This year was different, the weather held out and it was dry.
First up the wall was Chris in his 80, 4" lift, 37" tires made it look easy as he went far right up the obstacle. Followed by that hooligan in the FJ40. I was next. We decided that due to the 100's limited amount of ground clearance and longer wheelbase we'd go left. !st attempt resulted in kicking left and almost getting into the hole, but couldn't get enough traction to get over the 1st hump. We backed up, realigned and tried the same line, this time, SMACK right into the hole. 3rd attempt we went further left and GASSED IT UP, BOOM, SCRAP, POW, we were over! SWEET! We made it up! Time to watch the others!

I had been trying to figure out how in the heck I was going to get Stan and Chris, as you know it takes a huge effort to keep this gathering moving. the potluck as that time.
As some of you may recall, I whistled loudly, asked for everybody's attention. Several months before the event one of our biggest sponsors @benc reached out via mud with a great idea. We should get Stan & Chris a gift for all the hard work they pour into this event. So I created us a secret group on Facebook, invited past connections, new people etc into this group to talk about what we could do. The idea of a firepit come to mind. So a dozen or so of us, pooled our $ together. We purchased them a Solostove Bonefire, an incredible firepit that I hope will give these 2 guys many years of warmth, smiles and joy into their lives. From all of us to you!
Saturday arrived and we were headed out to my favorite tail in the area, Imogene pass and then Ophir back to Silverton. This trail stole our hearts our first year attending this event, HIH 5. The wildflowers, view are always incredible...to our surprise and delight, it was rainy, super foggy so it wasn't like we had seen it over the past few years. Led by my good buddy @smakee we set off, I would take gunner for the team this trail. It was beautiful in the fog, in some ares we couldn't see but 20 feet.

The Raffle & catered dinner. WOW. WOW.
Upon arriving back at camp mid afternoon, I received a txt that asked a few of us to set up the lodge. Absolutely! Within an hour we had 10+ people helping get set up, cleaned up and ready for the raffle. I was blown away how much was being given away this year, and some HUGE prizes. Hats off to each and every one who helped and a HUGE THANK YOU to all of the sponsors!
One last thing. Thank you, each of you in attendance that evening of the Raffle and dinner. We had a ton of work to do to get set up and we missed our opening time frame. Thanks for putting up with me policing the door, kicking folks out, so we were stepping over everyone as we set up. I really appreciate your flexibility and understanding. I had a great time meeting, chatting to everyone as they entered the event. Look forward to seeing many of you next year at HIH8!
Alex, Kateri and Jadyn
