This afternoon I tested a used '78 2F igniter in my '76 FJ40 with FJ60 distributor. I wanted to ensure the igniter would work with a 1/75 through 9/77 2F distributor converted to Toyota electronic ignition. Over the past few days I spent several hours searching the MUD forums and other Internet websites (including @Coolerman's ) to determine how to connect it to my stock '76 wiring harness. It turns out to be pretty simple.
With Toyota igniters from later (8/80 through 8/87) 2Fs, and the other compatible Toyota igniters (e.g., 8/81 through 6/82 Tercels) I've tested, all you have to do is connect the heavy gauge black w/yellow stripe ignition wire (with the ring terminal) to the coil (+) terminal. The brown wire from the igniter also connects to the coil (+) terminal and the black wire from the igniter connects to the coil (-) terminal.
The '78 igniter wiring is different. There is one 2-terminal wiring connector from the harness, with a yellow wire feeding 12V to the coil (+) terminal and a brown wire feeding 12V to the igniter. There is no wire directly from the igniter to the coil (+) terminal. Like the other 2F igniters, there's a black wire from the igniter to the coil (-) terminal. It took me a while to figure this out (longer than I'd like to admit), but all that's required is to connect the yellow and brown wires at the connector. I chose to connect the two wires by fabricating a connector jumper plug. That way I didn't have to permanently modify the igniter wiring. The jumper plug is at the lower center of the photo, plugged into the igniter's green 2-terminal connector. Here's a photo:
BTW, the other white connector is a 1-terminal connector that can be used for a tachometer - it's connected to the coil (-) terminal.
