new or used, the reason to stick with a brand that's been in the bizz for 50+ years, is for some sort of assurance you will have access to repair parts;) I wouldn't hesitate to go used, and therefore get more welder for same money, but as stated, try before you buy, or get it certified first.

I semi agree with LAMBCRUSHER. A good machine is going to be from a company that has been in business for a long time. USED welders if from a home owner or a dealer are O.K. you cant kill them or overwork them unless they were used for production. Miller is my preference. The machines they have today are very durable and homeowner friendly at the same time. Miller 211 autoset for about 1 grand with Aluminum spool gun is a good choice, it will weld up to 3/8" thick material. And you will have lots of friends who need stuff welded when you buy one.

Thanks Bob.

only if you're lucky enough to have relatives who understand the value of having one:doh:

I have a Lincoln 225 stick welder, which is useless for body work, so I bought an el cheapo northern tool mig 135 for only purpose of fixing the pig. I consider it a throw away. If I ever need a MIg again, it will prob need to be larger anyway, so about $300 and I was in the game. They have a 1800 hotline for help too, which I have had to call twice. This is my first mig rig, so I am was not familiar with them.. We have burned through 2 spools of wire, and 3 tanks of gas, and so far no problems.

Sorry guys, I was busy finishing up my college degree in spring and didn't really have time for the pig. Then summer hit and was busy with work and enjoying the good weather! The only update so far is that I did invest in a good Hobart mig and most of the tools needed for the fab and rust repair. Now that my seasonal job has ended and I'm back on a crew working construction I'll have the money and the weekends to devote to getting the pig ship shape before the snow flies! Be on the lookout for some new updates in the next few weeks!
