I was going through old pics and thought I would post up on running a 70 series snorkel on a 55. It is not "super super" clean but pretty clean. If you were to cut some little segments of plastic out of the snorkel and weld it (you do have to do it once regardless) then it would be cleaner. I used a harbor frieght "plastic welder" that worked pretty well. I have seen some other snorkels (popular in SLC for eons) modded from hardcore 40 series guys (you remember when they existed?) who wanted to put down their windshield. There are companies in Salt Lake City that are "plastic welding companies" and in my opinion they do good work, better than I could probably with the Harbor Freight plastic welder. But I think my job was actually pretty good...

I hope it helps..

First I noticed a strong similarity between 70 series and 55 series. It is funny to think of the 70 series body style "replacing" the 40, LOL. But it's true in a sense!

Next, I did the mod. No photos of actually doing it. One cut where the bend is around the bump on the upper fender where the vent is. Then I heated and stretched to get the upper part of the snorkel to countour (the pic of the inside of the snorkel facing the windshield.

In all an expensive experiment but it worked. But Safari Snorkels are so stupidly expensive, I am still not sure if its worth it...

Looking good

Are running the factory heater? I would like to do the same, but i would want to notch it out so the heater inlet isnt blocked.

I had that pig and still have that snorkel...

I need to pop that baby on my 55

Looks good, nice mod- how did you attatch to the carb/intake (diesel:flipoff2:).

I have a friend that formed his own fiberglass snorkel that doesnt look ghetto, until this last weekend I figured the only reason to have one was for bling... anybody ever climb on the hood of their SOA 36in Cruiser to get to their winch :D

BK could you post some more pics possible? I could run through it I think if I had some good pics.... Again the one cut was a wedge about 1" wide on the fat side if I remember correctly. I then welded it together. By using my hands on the hot plastic I was able to fudge down the plastic to looks smooth as it does... On the inside of the snorkel where it faces the windsheild and it is a little rippled, I used a MAP gas (yellow canister) light torch to soften up the snorkel to lightly bent as 70 series run a narrower windshild. And these were basically the two mods. The hookup to the air canister would have to be custom, mine required a small hose and that's it...

that is same one that i used for mine . I just used low heat and formed it to the body . and filled in the gaps with a poor mans plastic welder ( melted tye wraps ) . sanded it out smooth . then with a little heat pushed a textured seat cover into it to make the rough parts match .
It even took a tree in rubicon and held up with minor cracks , dented the the a pillar behind it ..
