What's the camping situation? I have ground tents but see many roof top tents in the event photos. We don't camp a lot. RTT would be nice, but the extra cost and effort to mount it, etc. seems a bit much for only a couple a camp outs per year.

If I set up a ground tent, do I have to break it down and take it with me on trail runs, or will it be there when I get back?

Just my 23 yr old son and myself. He is used to camping. The wife won't have any part of it!

You will be totally fine with a ground tent, which I have done the past three years! I would recommend a decent one, with a good rain fly, as it has rained off and on the last 3 years...pick your spot carefully, as high ground is hard to find! Some spots/areas are better suited than others for sleeping on the ground if it dumps like it did last year! If I get in this year with the registration, I will be happy to point out some of the better spots for sleeping on the ground!

If I get in I will be renting a pop up camper in Denver then driving down. I will also have my small ground tents with me if anyone has an issue with theirs.

I prefer the ground tent but with the 4yo and the chance of rain I will make the camper sacrifice. Also, his momma says no tent camping for her.

Thanks for all the comments regarding how to best bring 3 kids to an event like this when involving a cross country drive. I did my best sales pitch this weekend and only my 10 year old daughter was on board lol. But she's in a kind of Daddy's little girl phase so I think she would say yes to anything and I love her for that!! But I was hoping it was something I could talk the whole family into.

We don't get a lot of time off from work so just taking my 10 yr old wouldn't go over well. Guess I'll just have to keep living vicariously for a while longer. For those of you who make it in, have a great time!

I think you and your daughter would have a blast by yourselves! The rest of the family would be pretty sad seeing the pics of the trip and they would force you to get on board early next time around!
She's old enough to find her own fun with the other many kids around! Now, if she was only 3 or so then it would be a whole different story! Shoot for it anyways, you'll be glad you did it.

A little PSA: Just want to remind everyone and their families that altitude sickness is real. It affects multiple people every year - young and old. If you don't know how you or your family will handle it, please read up on taking the necessary precautions. With a lot of new people looking to come up from sea level, it's important. Not looking to scare anyone, this is an amazing event and its a bummer when attendees have to leave because of the altitude. Be prepared.

Quoting @paflytyer here, "Acute altitude sickness is a very real possibility while you are here. It's important to know the symptoms and understand the only cure is to descend to a lower altitude. Even going from 9,000 feet down to 7,000 feet will help. (6,000 and below is best) There is some good information about it here. Altitude Sickness

We have had folks pack up and leave every year because they were not getting better. It's important to know the signs. Please let us know if you're feeling any of the symptoms of altitude sickness, especially if we're on a trail. Hydration is vitally important. Start upping your water intake a few days prior to arriving. Just going into Ridgway for a few hours is usually enough to make you start feeling better. If you're coming from sea level, you WILL feel the mild symptoms. Headaches, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, shortness of breath. I live at 6,000 feet and still sometimes feel the effects of high altitude when I go above 13,000 feet."

Regarding altitude sickness, one thing that I've heard helps is to stay a couple days at a moderate altitude (5,000 - 6,000 feet above sea level) before heading up over ~8,000'. I have a friend that visited from coastal Virginia. I live at 5,000 ft. The day after she arrived, we drove up to Mesa Verde in SW Colorado which is 7,000 - 8,500 ft. The moment we got to the visitor's center at the top, we knew she had altitude sickness so we went back down. The next time she came to visit, we waited a few days before we went up to that high elevation and she was ok.

Just Decided we will be coming back this year from St. Louis!!
I am also moving to Denver in the fall so that will make my commute to Ouray a lot better for HIH7

If we both get in, we should get a small convoy going from St. Louis. I should have the Stage III's from Carl installed by then. UCA's shipped this morning!

I'll be driving thru the Lou from Nashville

@Nezzar @Scotch
Last Year we Stopped and camped Wednesday night in Colorado Springs. Then headed the last 5 hours on Thursday morning. Not sure what our plan will be this year but will keep y'all posted!

I'm planning to stop in St. Loius to rest. Doing the drive in 2 days, from Nazareth, PA to my sisters place in Denver, CO. Rest 1 day, then on to Ouray.

I'd be interested in meeting up if the times work out.

Wow, good to see the long distance travelers teaming up. Nothing more fun than a convoy of LC's coming across the country. Looking forward to Sunday...it is registration day!!! @paflytyer and I are already working with sponsors, shirt artist, sticker guy, etc. and we are excited about HIH6.

Anyone passing thru Denver on Thurs Morning should shout out, I'd love to set a meet spot and convoy out as a team.
^^ Yep Yep! Count me in! ^^

Good to see your getting better Stan! Seeing all your pics makes me want to fly over to attend one of your events one day!
