It's getting broken down for paint. Hopefully be driving it by the first week in July>

I'm working on two others plus trying to pay the bills so sometimes schedules don't always happen the way I'd like them to:confused:

I'm one of ROTW sign-ups who hasn't followed through yet (but not for lack of intent), hopefully I'll be given another chance when I'm ready. I won't sign up this time til my project(s) is/are complete.

hey that cruiser looks familiar, i could swear i saw it not too long ago.......

solid work sean, keep it up. then again, with rick D looking over your shoulder, how could it not be super clean and well planned?!

maybe i'll see you again next spring on our way thru. :steer:

The rear brakes look like 80 series. Are they stock on the FF 70 series axle? All years? What are your plans for the parking brake cable & lever?

One other thing. On the steering linkage... looks like FJ60 TRE's on the right hand side. Notice the TRE from the drag link connects to the tie rod off-center above the center line of the tie rod. Both FJ60 and FJ80 TRE's are this way, whereas the FJ40 TRE is centered. I ran this setup a few years ago along with 1.25 DOM tie rod and an oversize drag link to a saginaw PS box. It all seemed bomb proof, except for one thing. The drag link on the FJ60/80 is parallel with the tie rod so the loads on the TRE are mainly side to side. With the saginaw box the drag link is at an angle and because it attaches above the center line of the tie rod it ends up loading the TRE not only side to side, but also front to back. Steering right/left causes the tie rod to rock on the TRE balls as if they were going to twist out of their sockets. There was no breakage, but after a day of heavy trail use the tie rod jam nuts would loosen up. It looks like you have stock clamps on the tie rod so maybe that won't be a problem. There will still be some added slop since the PS box has to twist the tie rod against the TREs before the side to side movement starts. Just wanted to mention it as something to watch out for. I went back to FJ40 TREs after that. Unfortunately I didn't see an alternative unless going to 1 ton GM stuff which was a overkill for my machine.

Nice work on the rig. Looking forward to seeing more in ROTW.

This is a complete 70 series rear end. I'm pretty sure that the only thing that will work in a 70 series from an 80 series are the consumables, and possibly the bell cranks. I'm using a later style 40 series emergency brake cable and handle. It's not complete so no pictures yet.

those are 70 series tie rod ends. the 60 and 80 series ends may be off center right to left of the end but I'm not seeing how this would cause twisting? the set up I'm running from steering arm to steering arm is mechanically identical to a stock FJ40, only beefier.

were you lifted? spring over? sounds like you might not have had the right drop on your pitman. I cannot visualize any added slop due to twisting of any of the steering components? Please explain your thoughts on this.

saginaw box mount almost complete...........just a few mounting bolt provisions and complete the welds.

right now it's just tacked up for fitting.

Whose PS kit did you use? I like that "strengthening plate / curvy thingy" they provided that you cut your front crossmember to match.

Also, I am struggling with the auto tranny vs manual thing. I am a manual guy. In fact, I learned how to drive in the '74 FJ40 I am working on. I have a '76 donor with running 2f driveline but I'm not happy with the crawl ratio. I have been given a motor and tranny out of an 80's 60 series. Does that have a lower first gear? I found an article on the 'web that looked like there was a US market year range of FJ60's that had a granny 1st gear. Does anyone have any info on this? I can't find it now. Seems like an auto would give me a better crawl BC of what the torque converter does.

My '40 will eventually have a 383 in it and will be mostly driven on surface streets unless it is driven oh 50 to 75 miles or so up the Beeline Hwy or I-17 (both 65 mph roads) and wheeled moderately (2 -3 foot boulders and the like) up there. Should I mess with a tranny change? If so, do I need to worry about the "weakness" of a 4L60E versus the 80 in the "little" FJ40? I don't plan on going much bigger than 35's after a spring-over and an 80 series E-locker conversion.

On the rear DS length behind an auto or 5-speed. My dad already cut out the rear 'wells for wheel flares and did so centered over the stock location of the rear axle. How much does turning the springs move the axle back? Is it gonna look funny?? What's the fix? Massive body trimming? I'm not really opposed but have plans to use the stock spare tire carrier locations for a custom fabbed one to carry Gerry cans and the bigger spare.

its Luke's from 4X4 LABS, solid kit.

auto basically doubles, depending on the torque converter.

do I need to worry about the "weakness" of a 4L60E

not sure of any "weakness issues you'll encounter, but you will have that ECU module to deal with.

should be 1", depending on your overall lift it may not look funny at all, perhaps an improvement.

Yeah that's a great price too on the PS kit. Thanks for all the info!

I like the rear axle, does anybody else know a good source for 70 series axles? or approximate pricing?

Lift with the 700R4

I have a similar set up in the works. How much lift you shooting for with the 700R4? My original plan was to do a spring over and that looks like a non starter with the front driveshaft angle.

PS... My serpentine belt set up only cost me $15....... but I haven't tanked it yet.

Looking good!
What are you going to do for a parking brake?

After a second look I see the internal drum/disc rear brake. That is a great option for a parking brake.

X2!!!
What is that, and how does that work?
Can you do that to a 60 series rear semi float?

That is rad!

Nice build!
Im taking notes on this!

Can you tell me which Lokar shifter you used (part# if you have it)? I'm doing the same thing and am looking for a shifting system for my 350 & 700R4.

I'm running model # ATS6700D, which happens to be the 10".

there are many to choose from Lokar: Automatic Transmission Shifters

as it sits in the pictures it totals 4 1/4". 2 1/2" spring, 3/4" shackle and a 1" body lift.

a 60 series semi float will have the parking brake with drums

I'm not sure if a 60 series full float axle ever came with disc brakes? Maybe someone could chime in and answer that. almost positive that rear disc were full float, 70 series+ only.
