Just finished reading the write up over the last week... Great swap! I'm rebuilding the top half of my 2F right now, but plan to go the LS route in the somewhat near future. I'm sure i'll be looking through this thread in a lot more detail when that time comes. Do you know if there is a manual tranny option that holds up to the HP and Torque? I've heard that kind of HP/Torque hits the H55 limits, and the NV4500 shifts like a tractor, and isn't as fun with that race car engine in front of it. Would the GM T56 2WD 6speed manual work with the split case transfer case?

Anyways, great story!

I figure I am going to make a parts list in this post. It may be a bit pre-meditated, but better to be prepared. I will add/edit to this specific post as time goes on all the parts I am using or suggestions others have utilized. I'll try and include part numbers as time goes on as well. If it isn't here I may not have gotten to that stage yet (obviously), but appreciate suggestions. At the end the post will contain everything I utilized. I will also add PURCHASED in front of each item to keep everyone updated. This will also help me stay organized!

I’m doing this build on a fj62 with a lq9 and I purchased what I believe to be a 4l65e 4x4 . From what I’ve read I should have purchased a 2wd ? Even know my 62 is 4x4 . Did you purchase 4l60e 2wd or 4x4?

Yeah you need the 2wd trans and you have to cut down the output shaft to use the Toyota t case adapter

even if I want to keep 4x4 capability? There’s no way to use the 4l65e 4x4 ? I know the 4l65e are harder to come by (at least have had little luck finding them ) and I picked this one up for 300 so if there’s any way to use it IE adapters or anything I would like to use it. If it’s to much of a pain then I’ll start looking for a 2 wheel drive

You can use the 4x4 4L65E. In order to use it.. you have to swap the output shaft for that of a 2wd...
If you can work on your own tranny great..!!! upgrade all the innards as well (since you are in there)...
If you cant do your own work. then it'll be a pretty penny to have a shop do the work....
transmission is just the medium that transmits the power from the engine to the transfer case to your wheels...
so to answer you quesiton the 4WD factor has to do with your TC and not your transmission....

Yeah what he said lol looking for the 2wd trans will be an most cost effective solution I’m sure..

Ok thanks for the help much appreciated

It’s been about a year since my build. Must say haven’t been too active on mud. I lurk here and there though. Motor is running good! No major updates. Filled up my power steering fluid today. You get the jist of the update news.

Been so busy with the kiddo and another on the way that any major FJ revisions are on the back burner (just for a little bit). I know, I know... I have a hard time saying that too).

But.... life lessons on the things that matter most can be learned at 2 years old and re-learned at 39 years old. It’s a mad world! However, if the FJ keeps mean mugging me each day, I’m sure I’ll open a can of worms sooner or later. :p

That's awesome :)
Any quick updates on how the engine swap has been now that it's been 2+ years?

This was fun to follow along with. Very informative! Thanks for the detailed write up!
