Hey guys,
Funny, I was searching through the posts and saw this old one back up. I really like that tube wrap style bumper, may need something like that in the future. Eventhough is too kind...my corners are kind of rusty. They will definitely have to be chopped below the reflector mount. Speaking of which, I promise not to highjack this thread, but I may need to start a new one. Since wheeling with the UC boys in March my pig has undergone some changes. I got home and did a tune-up and got a new muffler since the mud and rocks at Cullowhee pretty much toasted my pig. Then I found out the mud had gummed up my brakes and had finished off the wheel cylinders. So...as I was pondering a disc brake swap, I decided to pull off my bent up drivers' side bumper end cap (also a victim of Cullowhee) to see how bad the corner dents and rust were. Well, after that I'm not really sure what happened. I drank a Rockstar energy drink (my new favorite cruiser motivator) and next thing I knew, I had all 4 doors off, seats out and dash dismantled. I think that I just got tired of seeing the old girl getting worse. I had a blast wheeling with the guys, but I really want to make the pig way nicer. And we all know that the only way to do that is to start over. So I'll end my babbling by saying what you've already assumed...FRAME OFF (For real this time)!!!!
I'll start a formal thread soon w/ pics (as soon as I get my star back), but let me just say I am loving this so far.
Last night I finished detaching the inner fenders and radiator support from the firewall. The interior has been gutted except for that beautiful headliner I installed last year. Dash and wiring is out. By my count, all I have left is the gas tank, tailgate, steering column, pedals, and misc. items attached to the firewall. Any help on how I take apart the steering column for body removal? Also, those tailgate hinge screws are frozen. Ideas??
I'm sure you guys need to know the plan too, so I'll give you as much as I have come up with:
Clean and paint frame and axles, refurbish seals where necessary.
Re-arch springs and refurb.
Convert to 4 wheel disc (not sure which method, yet)
Thinking about Chevy V8 w/auto tranny (or sm465)
And body work, of course - cut the corners and patch w/ bumper or something
- patch holes in front floor pan and support
- figure out what to do w/ rockers (rusty on inside)
- prep and paint
This is a project I have dreamed about since I bought this one 2 years ago. I have had many cruisers and learned a little bit more every time. Will take time and money. I will be counting on you guys for support. Kind of nervous about putting this thing under the knife (but not turning back this time). Stay tuned for more!
