@red mud fj Thats gnarly! I took a look last night and mine aren't that screwed up yet. Definitely will torque them down asap! I ordered new bushings for the panhard and frame end of the control arms. Hope to get them installed next week.

So I'm not sure if this is related to this "clank" issue but I spent an hour looking around the front suspension last night trying to find signs of metal on metal contact. I had numerous horizontal gouges on my tie rod. Even weirder many of the scratches where on top?! They look fresh. I found no evidence that the tiered was hitting anything as there where no gouges on the transmission or oil pan.

Sorry for the s***ty photo. Was pretty late and the light was bad when I took it.

Those are likely from the alignment, they use a wrench to crank on the panhard [edit: tie rod, not panhard] for adjustment. Mine has the same pattern.

not sure if the fat, invisible dude in camo already suggested it, but another thing to look for is cracks in the frame where the steering box bolts on.
My 105 series cracked here, and would clunk occasionally, but only turning in one direction

Went to another mechanic who owns an 80 and let him listen to it. He thought the noise was coming from the spring in the top coil basket. Didn't have any suggestions as to how to fix it. He mentioned that there was not a rubber isolator present. Should their be? Getting pretty despondent about all of this

Are all the brake lines bolted back to the frame? There's a couple that are unbolted to drop the axle far enough to put springs in.

I think we have a winner! I wench around with a 1/2 breaker bar and torqued all the lower control arm bushings. I couldn't;t budget any of them except for the most rear passenger busing that received a new caster bushing at the local shop. I got a half turn on this bolt. Went for very vigorous drive and couldn't replicate the noise!

I will be pumped is this permanently solves the issue!

Good, hope thats your needed fix.
When I fix my control arm bracket mess bolts were red locktite, air impact and torque to 130.
All ready for next adventure.:bounce2:

Well, this was boring... I mean, I'm glad it was something simple (and free, we, except for the $50 bounty) but this could've been a fun "rabbit hole" thread where you end up replacing the frame and doing a Motor rebuild and supercharger to try to get rid of the clank. Wait, nevermind, only @NLXTACY ends up doing something like that!

Yeah yeah yeah. Process of elimination :flipoff2:

It's not late!

unless he's told his wife it's fixed

@mudgudgeon I have been married to long to let a good problem like this go to waste! "Hunny the only way to get rid to that unsafe noise is to get icon 2.5 inch reservoir shocks!" Otherwise we will have to sell the car and get a new tacoma which would cost 20x more!"

Many thanks for all the suggestions. I tentatively declare @mudgudgeon the winner! Hoping it stays fixed throughout the day. PM me with your email and claim your prize!

There's hope for you yet!

No prize required man.

Mud has helped me fix problems over the years, although, usually problems I didn't even know I needed  :hillbilly::hillbilly:

So the guy on page 2 that said you should crawl around under the truck with a torque wrench isn't the winner?

A extra one I'll add since I didn't see it - that sound is very like what I had when I had my metal collar of the front bumpstop lightly rub a coil on either side front spring.

Fix for it was to grind off that flare at the bottom of the metal cup (as mounted) so the bottom 1/4" of cup - it is so close the coil will rub & the release has a 'gong' sound as the spring vibrates.

If the inside paint of the coil riding closest to that flare in the bottom of the bumpstop cup is buggered, that is your cause.
