Cody, et al, I haven’t forgotten about this but with a lot of things in play this Summer (including July 6 being my last day of full time work) I haven’t wanted to commit. Yet is is possible that I/we may be driving back out to the PNW around that time and if so we’ll stop by for a night or two. It would be great to see folks. Not interested in any shelf road trails but we love that area and there are plenty of places to explore. Not sure if we’ll be camping or not but we’ll sort that out later. Hopefully it will work out. I’ll sign up using the proper link as time gets closer.

I’m going to miss you guys by three days. I’ll be out there before FJ summit from July 12-22. If you guys have any questions let me know, I’ll be your boots on the ground prior to your event.

Signed up. Thx for organizing !

I’m an 80 series owner, and just purchased a 200 series. I will attend the last two days only, though.

I see the potential trail list here:

Is it @ your own pace (i.e. I want to do Trail x on the 28th @ 9am) or will there be somewhat of an order to it ?

Thanks!

Look forward to meeting you! Yes there will be some trail options for groups each day but will be more flexible than years past.

Welcome! I, too, love my 80 but have integrated (wifes 200) into this event. No better way to break the 200 in! Cheers...

What does everyone use for trail communications? In my Jeeps, I always had a CB, but haven’t installed anything in the Land Cruiser yet.

It’s a mixed bag here between Ham and CBs. I have a CB in my rig - thinking about picking up a GMRS or Ham hand held before the Moab/Telluride trip

We used GMRS/FRS last year in Breckenridge. Cheap radios ($25 per pair) and worked fine on the trails. No license required. Hoping everyone does the same this year

I picked up a couple of specially programmed radios at Cruise Moab’s vendor night. They allow both FRS and HAM simultaneously. So... You push one talk button to broadcast to ham...and another to broadcast to FRS. And of course listen to both.

Other Hans can be tuned to get FRS but it’s a pain to do on the fly.

If you are interested, talk to Midwest Overland. $45 per unit and they are 8 watt ham... Very helpful setup in mixed groups. No CB, but CB is just comparative bad news. I have two CBs and they both drive me nuts. Probably miss more messages than I can hear clearly.

This sounds like a winner. I’ll give them a call. Do you have the model number?

FYI these are what I grabbed last year:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019RIOX12

They seem a little quiet to me, but they worked well and are easily recharged with a micro USB cable. I don't have a HAM license so GMRS/FRS is the best I can use. I'm planning on bringing them this year.

I will likely order something similar to what you posted. However, with what Markuson posted, I believe you can listen to HAM, but not transmit. I currently don't have a HAM license, but that can be done pretty easily.

You can get a $35 baofeng hand held ham on Amazon that will work pretty well for trail communications.
Getting the ham license is a breeze, just takes a little time to study and go take the exam.

Correct you can listen. And actually in the event of an emergency, the FCC allows you to operate outside your licensed range (this is true for HAM and non-HAM operators). If you break down and are stranded you should be able to use the HAM band to request help (and a licensed HAM operator can use frequencies they are not licensed for). But you cannot transmit on licensed frequencies unless it's an emergency.

Question - I'm looking at traveling from Ouray to Telluride (via Camp Bird / Imogene Pass). This would be depart Ouray on CO 361 to Camp Bird to CO 26A to Telluride.

Please lemme know if anyone has traversed this route before. I have some questions for you...

Imogene Pass

Thanks!
