Im brand new to this site, sorry if this is in the wrong place..
My friend is selling her 90 4runner. Its got the 22RE engine, and what ever 5spd that came with it that year.. Its got a bit of rust, frame looks solid nothing to serious. However, there is a rattling noise that sounds like a heat shield, but my brother and i were unable to find it. Its not super loud, and she said shes had it looked at and also cant find it. Now, it makes a lot of drive train noise, and i dont think shes ever had the chain replaced. Its got 229kms on it i know shes done all the fluid changes but other than that, lets face it, shes a girl. More seriously it makes an odd rattling noise (lets call it) in 2nd,3rd, and 5th gear under load.
Id really like to buy this truck, but i know the timing chain on these units is an issue, any ideas? How much does it cost to replace said timing chain? And should i be worried about this tranny noise?
Thanks guys much appreciate any Positive feed back you might have.

Are you hear to sell a truck or get help with the problems? You can post the truck for sale in the classified section here at MUD. Make sure you read the Classified Rules before you post.

For sale ads should not be posted in Tech, which is where you are.

Both are very easy fixes. The trans is the W56, and can be had at every corner drugstore. And the working on a 22re is......well easy and cheap.

That is if they are bad. I would check the chain anyway, odds are it is rubbing.

Pappy, it doesn't sound to me like he is trying to sale the vehicle, just wants to know about fix? Sounds to me like you need a $95 timing chain/sprocket/tensioner kit, and the labor charge for installing it!!

Pull the valve cover off and look down the drivers side of the timing chain, there should be a chain guide in there, and if it's gone, that's probably causing the rattling sound. Less than $100 in parts, and a good weekend job...

The trans... Sounds like rebuild time to me... But without hearing it in person it's hard to say...

Not selling, looking to buy... Hmmm well im glad the timing chain is cheep, but i can imagine its a bastard to change.... As for a tranny rebuild, really not sure if im interested in that much work...
Thanks guys

I am not sure I would call a timing change swap an easy fix. I am very mechanical now, but back in '93, the very first vehicle I ever worked on was an '83 toyota 4x4. Its hard to remember what things look like to a rookie mechanic, but I remember vividly how hard it was to change that timing chain in my 22r. could probably do it in a night now.

If you want this vehicle for a daily driver....pass on it. the second gen 4runner is a bit portly for a 4 cylinder to push around.

If you want it for a builder, go for it, cause you're probably gonna junk that engine anyway. good luck.
