You'll always save yourself some headaches by bleeding the master cylinder prior to install. Yeah good wirte up. By the way what's the advantage of the backing plate elminator "kit" , fewer hoses / hard line?

The backing plate, aka "rock catcher" can sometimes allow small stones to be wedged between the backing plate and rotor causing a loud squeal and perhaps damaging the rotor if in there long enough. Some knowledgeable dealers claim removal also allows better cooling of the rotor.

Dirty ?!? Sacrebleu! Sacrilege ! Merde! Never ! :crybaby:

And forgot to mention, with the backing plate gone, you no longer have to break the line to remove the caliper. Just tie it out of the way like every other truck in the world.

Nice! What is the benefit of removing the backing plate?

Calipers are Toyota, remanufactured, from the dealer. They're nice, but you can probably get the pro grade Raybestos or Bendix, loaded, for a much better price. I just decided to go Toyota 'cuz I'm nuts.

Also, marlincrawler.com has the loaded caliper for $119. V6 IFS Front Brake Caliper | Marlin Crawler, Inc.

I have a press and popped 'em in and out myself.

As for caliper, just make sure you get the ones that have this casting:

Why that casting?

Also thanks for the lead on the master cylinder, I got it Friday.

That casting # indicates it's the larger caliper ....

I like the backing plate eliminator kit!! I've never heard of that before, but if it comes with SS lines that work, that's a huge bonus. That's definitely going to be ordered for my truck!

For clarification, the backing plate eliminator kit is this one from marksoffroad.net, right?

144-07 BKNG PLT ELIMINATOR HOSE SET 55.00

SS lines work great. I had to bend the hard line on the axle slightly to get the fitting to reach, but other than that, plug 'n play.

Just saw that you had to grind the calipers; what size wheels are you running?

g'day fellas, 60 owner from aust, just a quick question about master cylinder size for the 4 runner calipers upgrade with 60 series standard calipers on the rear (four wheel discs). The T-100 is mentioned, but we don't have such a beast over here (aust) so was wondering if a toyota 1" master cylinder would do or do i have to go bigger

Good tech, thanks spike. Pics help a lot. I never knew about the backign plate eliminator. I just hacked my plates up last time I packed my bearings.

FAQ'd.

Plumma -

MC is a 1" bore. The one from the early FJ80 will work too. You should have that available. There is also a 1- 1/16" MC, from the 1-ton pickups, that will bolt up, but requires more plumbing.

However, since you have 4 - wheel disc, you might want to go with a later 80 series MC which is designed for disc front and rear application.

15 inch wheels. Normal offset.

I ground one caliper a little, but then tried some 1/4" wheel spacers and found the wheels cleared fine, without grinding, after that.

Stock wheels are supposed to clear the larger calipers, without grinding and no wheel spacer.

Mine are American Racing spoke wheels.

How long are those SS brake lines? I can get them made locally for just a few dollars if I know the length. I guess I'm too lazy to go out and measure. I think I'll hack my backing plates and turn them into spacers, that won't cost anything!

Dunno the length ... But since they're on the truck, when I get some work clothes on, I'll crawl under and try and measure...

I was going to just cut my backing plates, but since they're so clean, I decided I didn't want to destroy 'em. :meh: Besides, the eliminator plates were only $19. Try finding a pair of rust-free, straight backing plates for $19.

I forget the exact price, but I think the whole kit from Mark A. at Marksoffroad.net was $50-60. Not too bad with two DOT SS brake lines.
