Hopefully, that'll get me re-energized to get back at it this weekend.

Ill bring some always sunny....that should de-energize you.

Not as much progress as I'd like. But that's how it goes most days. I think the sheath on the 110V MIG gun is dead. The wire keeps binding and wadding up at the feed rollers.

Made most of the patch panels for the left side.

4rnr got the last patch in the bed done, Then sanded the bed down. Gotta put the rear sill plate in then I can primer it.

Then we put the bed on to line up the sill. That led to putting on the cab. Then assembling all the other parts just because.

Man you do not sit still.... very impressive.

Friday I loaded up the camper and trailer and drove down to the Badlands off road park to go wheeling and pick up a rusty 40 in trade for a couple of SOA axle housings. It was some cold camping Friday night, but a good day of wheeling on Sat.

Easily the rustiest vehicle I've ever seen, but it's a 78 with good SUA axles.it's got quite a few other parts I can use and I can trade for other stuff I need.

I went in today for about three hours.

Got the 40 unloaded and on a hoist.

sprayed the frame in self etching primer, then epoxy primer/sealer. I love the way a frame looks when it's all newly painted.

sprayed most of the bed with SE primer and then epoxy primer. I'll flip it tomorrow and do the side I couldn't get to

Spring break next week so no pesky job to get in the way of making some real progress.

Got the axles out of the donor truck. The frame was so rotted it broke off once the springs were cut free. The passenger side is being held on by the battery tray.

Tomorrow we're just gonna cut the frame off behind the trans mounts to drop the engine out. Looks to be the easiest way to get it out at this point.

Sandblasted the axles, fuel tank and the rest of the tub. Went through four bags of media, but I'm pretty happy with the progress. Not sure if this will be the front axle I'll use. The knuckles out are good. The housing is a bit pitted.

Sandblasted the front wheels on the outsides too. Looks like they will work.

TIG welded on the cab for a couple of hours. getting there. Little bit more on the corner and then inside floors.

Ordered another gallon of epoxy primer. I only used up a quart I had on a shelf so far. A gallon will do the rest easily. Ordered another gallon of Self Etching too.

Spent about an hour on the pig to get the radiator all mounted so I could move it out of the way.

4rnr John came by and grabbed the bezel and front of the hood off the parts truck for his bar, then built the motor mounts and trans mount. Still a little finishing to be done, but the drive train is in the frame without a engine lift.

Long day.

Fought with my Millermatic 130. Finally got it working and welded for about an hour on the tub. One more piece on the back, then the driver's floor and I can primer it.

Welded in the rear crossmember in the bed. Still need to plate over that once I seal the crossmember with SE and epoxy primer. The plasma quit working so I have to find a different way to cut a four foot piece for that sill plate and the two flanges where the top will meet.

Got the frame on the hoist and John fought with the trans crossmember for a while. It looks really nice and clean now, just needs to be welded in place.

Put the water pump and fan on and set the radiator in place for final motor placement before burn in tomorrow.

The big job today was getting the motor and trans out of the 40. We cut the frame off behind the trans mounts, then took the frame off the motor and trans mounts on the floor. Actually, the motor mounts just fell off. I don't know what was holding the motor up.

The 40 tub is ready to go to it's new home. The motor and trans is ready to go to it's new home. And the rest of the 40 is sitting outside for the scrap guy less the 5 gallon bucket of rust flakes that was left on the floor once the motor was out.

Felt like a worthless day, but I guess it wasnt...

Hopefully all the "figuring" is done with the drive train mounting and its just a matter of some buzzing.

I cant wait for the fab to be done, im hopeing the assembly will feel more rewarding as it starts looking like a truck.

The nose of that rusty ass 40 is gonna look good behind my bar!!!!

I think you can fix it!
Good gravy, what happened to the shifter???

As it turns out.... the shifter isnt strong enough to keep a 2f drivetrain in the vehicle using the gravity machine.

I like it. I think I'll keep it.

The nice thing about a couple of days of seemingly no progress is eventually all the little things start coming together. It also helped that I had nothing else going on and almost no visitors.

Got the last piece of the sill/corner made and tacked into place. I really wanted to get it welded in today, but I'm completely beat. Tomorrow for sure. I have to cut down the corner to match up and weld in a flange for the bottom too.

Burned in the trans cross member and motor mounts.

Installed the axles. Waiting on u-bolts and I have to find out if I still have some spring plates. I gave a bunch of them to PhilC64. Hope I saved a couple. The ones on the front of the parts 40 were rusted completely away.

Put the new brakes and axles in the rear.

SE primered everything. Then epoxy primered everything.

Set the drive train back in.

Put the primered fuel tank in on a strap to make sure it's gonna fit.

Set the newly primered bed on. That was a bit difficult by myself. I put the hoist up about halfway, leaned the bed against it, then lowered the hoist. It mostly dropped right into place.

Put the steering box back on. I have to make and hook up a relay rod so I can push it around the shop.

jeeze, I dont think im gonna come by to "help" anymore. I clearly slow things down!

Short day today. About 4 hours.

Finish welded the driver side sill all the way around to the back. Still have to make and weld in the corner flanges.

Flipped it on it's side and welded together a whole bunch of flanges on the pieces I had already welded in.

Made the upper and lower top flange to make the cut off top permanently removable. I have to clean up the cut on the tub and top so I can install them.

Cut out the old ds floor. ground down the supports. Made a new floor. Wrecked my bad elbow turning the crank on the bead roller. I need to get a foot controlled motor on that thing.

Gumby, you downplay your "skillz" with the welder, but I wish I could marry metal as well as what you're doing in this build.

Elbow is really wrecked. Bad tendinitis that flares up when I work too hard. Forced to take the day off other than picking up the high fill primer and the u-bolts.

I'm really anxious to get the tub in epoxy primer. Maybe tomorrow. The family is headed out of state for a couple of days. It'd be a fine weekend to spend in the shop. Hope resting today gets me back at it tomorrow.

The boys and I will be in St. Charles tomorrow. Maybe we'll call and see if you're at the shop.

It's nice to see someone spending the time on it that I didn't have. Keep up the good work.

Wouldn't have minded staying a couple more hours, but I opened the door because it was so nice and people stared visiting. It's tough to weld when somebodies standing there yammering at you.

I did get the flanges all around the bottom corners done.

I filled the two holes in the body that still needed patches.

I did not get to the heater vent hole that was cut in the fender.

I did not get the floor pans welded all the way in. Those would have been what I worked on this evening if I had stayed. Maybe tomorrow.

The big job today was welding in the new top flange. I welded in one solid piece from door jam to door jam, then put a T flange on that similar to the one on the removable hard top trucks. It came out really nice.

John was able to make two front spring plates and bolt in the axles. That was really cool because my elbow couldn't take the hammering and prying. The chassis sits on it's own wheels now. I need to get it off the hoist for next week. That was a huge help.

MetalFab Jose came over for the parts 40. That took a bit of the day too, but we got it out of the shop so that was really good. He gave me a nice split hood for it. That was a great bonus.
