Man, that looks awesome! Are you due for new tires, so that's why you're asking about changing to bigger rims at the same time? Otherwise, I'd keep that combo. Looks great!

Thank you. That's what it looks like after a 7 month rebuild, and I still don't have it all back together yet. Whenever it's in one piece and has new shoes, I'll bring it to the Cherokee, along with some bootleg craft beers.

On the tires, the sidewalls of both DS tires were buggered up in last year's roll over, and the PS tires have major cracking despite only having 5K miles. Insurance paid for the two damaged tires. The tires came from Costco, and I think they'll replace the cracked tires at no charge, or reimburse me. If I have to buy all new tires, I may as well go up to 16" or 17"--more options, and they're cheaper.

Speaking of tires, Todd's friend Mark Algazy swears the best size tire for an old school skinny look is 235x85-16, equivalent to a 32x950. That may be what I end up with.

Yes, the 85 aspect sidewall is a great tall and skinny. Believe they also make an 80 aspect sidewall for a 17. I think JBo has 255/85R16s on his 62, and they look killer.

If you must go bigger, look at the wheels on Tolleson's 40. Those wheels are classy looking.

I agree that those are the best looking wheels around. Pat Hall put Mojaves on the 40 that he bought from Parker Graves, but he stuck with 15". If I end up buying new wheels, I'll at least go to 16".

Discount Tire sells a ripoff version of the Mohave. 16x7 size is around $100, and has the correct backspacing. That may be a possibility.

I'd have to consider those. If I remember correctly the 16x8 Teflon Mohave were around $150 each my cost 3 years ago. And they do not fair well in rocks. Scratch up bad like a kid riding a big wheel on his momma's hard wood floor.

I'm thinking about putting 17x7 FJC steelies on my 40. Would have to use spacers to make them work. What's your opinion on the look? Opinions from the local Cruiser nerds range from nice to fugly. I kinda like the spartan look.

The one advantage of the OEM 16/18 hole black wheel is the weight. They are same weight as aftermarket alum wheels about 20 to 25 lbs.

Other steel wheels will creep close to 40 to 50 lbs.

Plus Toyota oem wheels have a unique drop center to most of there wheels.

Thanks Lash and yep, the roll bar is chromed. I guess you didn't see the rustbucket when I had it at 49 Tire several years ago. It has the "rare" factory chrome package, which I've never particularly liked. Roll bar, instrument bezel and glove box doors, shifter and t-case levers, clutch and brake pedal buckets--all chrome. It was originally a showroom truck at Monterey Toyota in California. I'd originally planned on replacing all the chrome, but I finally got used to it.

Yes, some 4-Runners had 16x6 steel wheels, and I've found them locally for under $200 a set, but didn't care for the look.

Tacomas came with 16x7 steelies, like this, $69 each, but I'm not sure how they'd look on a 40.

Also 15" tires are not going anywhere since Toyo just started making a 33x10.5 in the MT.
