I would have him define "runs". Does it turn over or will it roll down the street at 45mph?

Price seems high to me...hard top?

Agree. Baton Rouge is only 3 hours from here though, i can make that trip tomorrow or Friday no sweat, actually look at it.

If it runs and isn't rusted through anywhere, i might take a shot at it if i can get it at or under $3k.

awesome...didn't realize it was so close to you. get pics and if they look decent then take a look. check rear sill, frame, floor for rust and look at vin plates on drivers door jam, engine and on frame (should be on passenger side front) and see if they match...bonus if they do..not a show stopper if you dont want a purist truck.

id inquire on history and what they know of where it has lived, usage

fingers crossed.

i haven't seen the truck but it looked good in the add. Those older ones have better bodies, but you'd need disc breaks pretty quickly imo. If i didn't have multiple personal crisis going on I would have scooped it.

12/1974 was last date for the F.

74 has the 4-speed, 73 has the 3-speed, 76+ is disc, 78+ is fine spline pinions, 79+ is 3.73 gears 72-73 have the good lower t-case, 79+ has the bigger minitruck birfs and knuckles

Beautiful summary, SHUSH :)

When did the sheetmetal get thinner?

74 and earlier had better sheet metal but much worse as far as parts, no 2f or disc brakes etc.

I would hazzard a guess that is what started the community swapping bodies or finding an early truck and converting to disc, ps, and a drop in crate v8

79 and up had weird rust issues due to a different paint technique

I've seen that the disc brake installs can be done. But I'm only assuming that moving to a 2F engine (only if necessary) is possible in a 71? Have also seen transmissions switched in with the floor shifter (as opposed to on the column). Anybody have any experience with these issues?

I'm obviously not a 'purist' so the above changes aren't out of the question, especially if this winds up being a legitimate truck option.

I cant speak specifics bc i obviously havent done it but I dont see why you couldn't a 2f should fit a 71 engine bay. Disc conversions are well documented as are transmissions and floor shifter switches.

I'd take the constraints of your budget and determine if you want to be a body guy or a mechanic guy and buy in that regard.....ie if you are a body guy go for a truck with good mechanics and do the body work or vice versa......or be super patient and find both.

I think you are wanting something to work on so a cheaper 71 will give you room to build and transform the truck into what you want it to be.

No reason the ditch an F for a 2F. None. Get that F purring and you will be happy.

Toyota 4 speeds are fairly easy to find. I like the idea of swapping the 3 speed for a later 4 speed for drivability. It is an easy swap. At the very least, there are kits that allow you to get the shifter off the column.

Disc brakes are very easy. You will have to get brakes from a late 76-up Cruiser or better yet, a mini truck. Best thing to do is buy a complete axle (40, 60, mini-truck) and you will have all the parts you need.

Brakes and new knuckles bolt right on the axle ball. You need the birfields too so that makes buying the axle whole the best play.

Couple of points....big birfs started 4/78 not 79, but the smaller knuckle pattern.

78 is only year with fine spline 4.11's until the 80 series rears.
