After spending the other day riding around with some jeepers from arkansas crawlers, I am wondering what the 40 guys from CLC have done to widen the stance on their 40 axles. The few time I took my 40 out it felt very tippy. I am wondering short of swapping out axles what I can do and what others have done.

I am assuming that Chris, Jrob, Bodean and Lash are all running stock 40 axles but not sure and for some reason I am just getting around to asking. So what say CLC?

Wider tires, wider wheels , wheel spacers . Combo works best if ya didnt want to swap axles. Sometimes ya just get used to the tippienes the more ya wheel.. Its funny what i am used to nowadays vs when i started out.

Right on. Wheel offset helps too if you get some in the 2-3" range. Also, (can of worms here) lengthening the wheelbase helps with side to side stability too. Ask Jrob after his flop at Sicily Island :(
 
Bossman, side to side stability is what I am trying to fix. The few times I've had it out it seems like I am always leaning into something. What would be the largest spacer you could put on it and still drive it around town?
 
Mike, I'm running 1 inch spacers on 8 inch wheels and have yet to extend the length. Only because Murrah has not done his yet. Lash, JT, Srob, Fergie Ferg & Jrob are just about to leave me & Murrah at camp! Which is ok, because Murrah likes camp and I'm gonna ride with Debbie in Sandy Dat Ass...

Umm, yep. That's what I was trying to say. All of the things listed are improvements to your side to side (off camber) performance. Lengthening the wheelbase also helps too.

1" to 1.5" spacers is the max I would recommend. Adding spacers has an impact on steering (Ackermann Angle) and also on bearing load.
 
I have been running 1.5" spacers for almost three years with no adverse effects. Wheel backspacing is between 3.5 & 3.75". With the spacers my effective backspacing is 2.25 - 2.5". If you can find wheels with that backspacing, no spacers needed.

I also flipped my rear springs to gain almost 4" of wheelbase. You will need an extended flex brake line and extended driveshaft. I used the diff side of a 1985 4Runner front double cardan shaft along with the short side of my '77 rear shaft to end up with a shaft that is ~3.5" longer. You will also need shims to point the rear pinion up at the transfer case output. This is required when using a double cardan driveshaft. Then you get to deal with rear fender sheet metal...

I don't have rear fender sheet metal. Bondo mostly. Thanks for info.
 
That truck actually had my old 35's on it for a short while. I think the mean look scared Shush. Lol
