We talking 40 right?

The engine just revs up on its own or this is happening after you are pushing the gas to climb a hill? Linkage getting stuck? How do you make it quit?

Yeah, I was kind of vague, my fault. Up a hill, shifting and accelerating hard (speeding up real fast), etc.

Linkage is free, and I checked to make sure it's opening / closing the carb properly (it is).

Only way to make it quit is to let off the gas and let the engine recover.

Basically it drives fine as long as I'm accelerating slowly on flat ground!

I had some of the same issues with my carbs. Until Myron Watson got ahold of it. It just was not adjusted right and it had some vacuum issues as well.

Could be spark breaking down under load due to bad plug wires, cap, rotor, etc. but my guess is carb issues. Check for vacuum leaks at all the hoses and plugs first (don't forget the brake booster). Then, as suggested, spray some carb cleaner around all the mating surfaces of the carb and listen for a change in RPM.

My carb was leaking like crazy down at the bottom where it rested on adjuster plates (might not be right terminology).

You can spray brake cleaner in those areas and if there are leaks it will stall motor.

I also had a bad leak, but am pretty sure I fixed that when I changed out the brake booster. it was easy access, so I put in new seals and so far have no fuel accumulation on top of the manifold.

Will give this a try this weekend. Brake booster is new, and with the Weber carb vacuum issues are greatly simplified...right?

I'm assuming Myron is local to you guys? So I'd have to trailer it over and leave it. Even so I'm inclined to do this as opposed to trusting someone over here. Serious lack of mechanical talent in this town.

Make sure you don't have any plug wires crossed. When I did the tbi i crossed two plug wires up and it idled fine but spit and sputtered under throttle.

Now this could easily be the culprit, since I changed all that out. I'll go 2x check it.

Plugs are 1-6 front to back, if I remember correct? Or is it the reverse?

Myron is good. As soon as Crawl is out of the way, I am going to let him play with the pig.

If I can't figure it out he's gonna be where I take it.

Although I'm sure word would get out after he looked at it as to just how bad my mechanical skills are!

I believe it to be a fuel/carb problem. If it was electrical it should be doing it all the time, stress on the motor should have nothing to do with it. This is the EXACT same thing mine was doing. Spent about 700$ on the carb,.......then went with AFI.

It could be the carb. You got a 38 Weber? MYRON is the best with them but you might have to beg. He stays pretty busy with boats. He was once "the man" when it came to toyotas!

Haven't touched my carb in about 12 years. 38 Weber.

Yes, it's a 38 Weber. I'm really hoping to fix/drive and not replace/upgrade at this point.

I will do some work this weekend and see what I can figure out.

Yeah but it only appeared in photographs for about ten of those years...
