The carb cover is getting worked on currently so I already know that's missing. Just looking for suggestions. I will be firing this thing up after using the mystery oil (that has yet to be delivered). I will be removing the radiator hose from the block and filling it with premixed coolant/water 50/50. My BIGGEST concern is any advice on other things to check that you may notice is missing. I have yet to install reservoir and some of these hoses sheesh! It looks like someone put a red garden hose on the heater inlets and outlets. Also I found what appears to be a rubber hose being used to connect the front half of the brake lines to the back half. I'm new to this thing and am going through the school of DIY and hard knocks. So trying to not make a $1k mistake if ya know what I mean.

Also I have yet to bench bleed the master cylinder for brakes and that's why it's not in yet.

On the left with the red cap is your distributor. Then oil filter / housing, then your fuel pump. You can see the hose with the chrome filter leading up and connecting to it. Hard line comes out the other side (towards front) and wraps around the valve cover and up to the carburetor. Sorry if I misunderstood the question!

Your answer is good. I removed the old original fuel filter and I was guessing the big chrome device was the pump and the smaller chrome was the new filter that needs no mount. I may still do a custom mount or try to rig it to the original arm that held the original filter.

So what is the hose that is free dangling from the bottom of the heater blower motor? Also why would someone use a rubber hose to connect brake lines from front to back? And what is the little 3 inch emissions box on the driver side with the wires running to it for?

Hose from the bottom of the heater blower motor is the heater motor blower drain hose.

Where is the rubber hose connecting brake lines from the front to back? I can see the hardline running across the firewall then down into a coil/ loop into the tee to head to the back. There would be a rubber hose at then end of that run down to the fitting on the rear axle housing.

The emissions box is a VSV (Vacuum Switching Valve) that has sensors and vacuum lines to control various inputs/ outputs for emissions control (distributor, speed sensor, etc). I'm not super familiar with it as mine does not have one.

Huge help thanks so much. I'll use everything you guys are telling me on here to deal with the reality under the hood. I'm not messing with the drain hose on the motor then. It's a rubber hose running to one of the metal lines by the fuel pump and filter. Again, thanks for the knowledge. I didn't trace that all the way so dunno where it goes yet. I'll actually be working on it tomorrow and I'll find out.

That's probably the return line back to the tank.

@pb4ugo is correct. That line should run from your carb back to the fuel tank under the pass. side.

Clean the sh*t out of everything, grab a factory service manual for your year, and that will help guide you on how things should look.

If you don’t care as much about originality, just look at some really nice under hood photos and start organizing towards that. My engine bay was much less original and as dirty as yours. While it’s not much cleaner, it starts instantly every time and I know each component on mine. I’d also recommend going through 1 system at a time, not just an area of the vehicle.

For example, I focused on air / fuel first. Then moved to electrical. Now I’m on braking (and while I’m in there (famous last words…) rebuilding the knuckles and inspecting the axles).

Good luck! There’s TONS of great info here and many knowledgeable people (much more than be) on 40s.
