Now that the honeymoon is over and she's successfully staked her claim, by even marking her spot...

Time to get on with the reality that IS equivalent to marriage, and begin wiping evidence of POs past away, while prepping for a lifelong commitment from both.

Cooling system needs completely redone, but a surmountable task, beyond the determination of whether or not to add an oil cooler, as its devoid of now.

Carb/dizzy/ignition needs attention....

I got mine working by d"swapping out the very hidden fuse.... If I recall it was hidden in a wire up in he dash tucked away above the passenger footwell I recall. I distinctly remember is was wrapped in yellow toyota factory tape

Very strange place for it... I also needed to ground mine.

Not certain where the relay is, but best I can tell, the carb fan is inop, beyond having a port to cool.

Dude...I want that front exhaust shield! ;)
You have a lot to do, but it's all fun stuff, and by seeing your previous work, you'll have it ship shape in no time! I added an oil cooler to mine (I have a Fed. model '78...12/77 birth date), it didn't come with one, but I had everything from a '79 parts 40. If you are redoing your cooling system anyway, good time to buy the water pump with the extra port and go for it!
Good luck on it all!!

Hidden fuse is near the hidden Carb Cooling Fan Relay on the passenger side, behind the air duct, below the glovebox

Thanks!!

Need to determine if the carb fan is staying....or how to implement with a non-US filter can.....if I can make the can work with power steering pump placement.

This one?

Message address and I'll send it your way. Won't be needing with the larger filter can......again, assuming I can get it to work.

It's taking all I have to resist the suggestive chants from the voices in my head, BUT, at least this can be staged and not incapacitate for years on end.

Really had no intentions of finding the keeper nor another resto, but I'm smitten, kinda crazy, and intend to do it right, in time.

I added an oil cooler to mine (I have a Fed. model '78...12/77 birth date), it didn't come with one, but I had everything from a '79 parts 40.

Is an oil cooler necessary?

Even a prudent measure?

With forty years of petrochemical advances and the introduction of synthetics, I'm questioning, since conventional Dino deteriorates ~250 degrees, synthetic ~350 degrees.

A low reving tractor engine, one would think that there wouldn't be enough internal heat generated, with healthy cooling and combustion.

Desmogged (in my case, but properly smogged and tuned should be the same) and "tuned" should eliminate a lean condition that might contribute to higher internal temps.

What furthers the inquisition is the lack of oil cooler on non-US vehicles, even some U.S......although I can see little rhyme or reason to Mr. T's thinking.

At this point, leaning heavily towards not adding the cooler, but interested to hear any experiences that may prove that a bad decision.

If you are redoing your cooling system anyway....

It's first on the list to be redone, currently on the hunt for what parts I don't have on hand, primarily the upper housing.

Tanks with the caps, motor, and straws arrived yesterday, since current overflow was lacking the tube and washer reservoir was busted.

So, my questions of the day are:

Cooler or not?

Which upper housing to use, based on that decision, along with future implementation of PS and AC?

Which water pump....'cause this one looks nothing like those I had on hand?

Radiator related:

Appears that a previous repair at the outlet has been done.

Realize a better question at a shop with a test tank, but thinking of swapping for new or stellar condition tanked and rodded used.

Lastly, the squirter tube is clogged.

At first, I thought it was with paint, but realized the nozzle is actually at the top of the windshield.

Thinking I'd want a few extra feet to be able to reroute a new tube, using the existing to pull new through.

Haven't searched, yet, but if any advice, I'm all eyes.

A bit of good news, albeit a future endeavor.

Found the pocket plate I've been looking for:

Which should complement this well:

Appears to have 40 output flanges, even.

A self imposed directive to NEVER be lured into a split case ebrake hunt again, prompted this acquisition, as well, a FF 40:

Yes, a little past crusty, but housing is in good shape and a 4 bolt pattern, so 60 outers should work without issue.

Carb and insulator arrived, but still questioning what's necessary, what's not, and of it's not, what the hell it's connected to now.

Loose lines/wires, some that trace back nowhere, others I have no clue yet.

Will need AC line, but not entirely certain I understand how to add, but guess it can be done later.

Its a little different, following an FSM when everything's where it's supposed to be.....

No idea how I missed this! That is so nice? Those water pics down by Leonard? Hopefully the 78 I have will look half as nice when I'm done!

Don't worry about the oil cooler.. It's more work getting it installed and functional than you might think..

that FF rear axle already has the FJ60 brakes on it. Why are you thinking of swapping to 60 series outers?

Thanks, Jon.

Having had my hands all over her for the last couple of weeks, she's not perfect, but looks good enough to delay the inevitable P&B, while the mechanical/electrical revisions are ongoing.

I was going through pics on iPhone, trying to free up space, since the newest isn't large enough to store, and found these from a couple of years ago.

Only time she moved was when she couldn't see you in the store!

Better mannered than 95% of the people I know.

Around that timeframe and against my wants, wishes, or input, we added two Min-Pits to the family.

The have no manners, almost two years later.

(Boston's, but "Min-Pits" always raises the brows of anyone who dares approach and question.)

Remember thinking how miserable a drive you had in front of you. Ha.

(Now to Dropbox the pics go)

Those water pics down by Leonard?

Yes, at Bixoma.

Have been trying to talk Mrs. D into relocating the 5 miles south, but the fear of snakes in the sticks precludes her interest.

Found a decent ten acres for very reasonable money, even, only lacking the view sought, due to the heavily forested landscape on about a 35 degree face.

Since I was a kid, it was commonly known that copperheads hadn't established themselves on the north side of the river and it appears that has maintained true, to this day.

Have a buddy that lives on Leonard Mountain that two guests have left in ambulances, having been bitten by juvenile copperheads. Neighbor that works at a bank on the south bank of the Arkansas, discovered one inside the bank a month ago, both furthering Mrs. D's resolve to refuse.

Kinda what research has shown, since modern lubricants don't break down at low enough temps to be of any concern and with emissions equipment removed, it won't run lean.

To be honest, I didn't realize that the system was designed to run at as lean as possible, but it makes sense.

Replacing may be a better description, since European roadways are not kind to anything metal.

I don't know if the backing plates can be salvaged and most of the mechanisms that should be free enough to move by hand, are frozen in rust.

Really unsure the extent, having not had a minute to tear into yet, but hoping to tear it down the first of June to see what all will be needed, what cross references, and what doesn't.

Can I have the old shifter plate in exchange for cruiser inspection ? There's a guy in south Florida selling a bunch of them, thought you might be interested.

:flipoff2:

Brandon, FL too far?

I'll give you $12k for the three VMJ73s.

Sure come and get them!!

Flight lands 5/27.

Do you take cash?

You can have the plate, but will have to remind once the H55 goes in.

I've learned that swapping things of this nature, before contingencies become realities, forebode failure.

Outstanding Chris!! But, what was that twangy noise that was drowning out the engine?? :hmm:

What's funny is, you can't hear the tunes over the engine, in cab, but it's crystal clear in the crappy, shaky video.
