I have a broken synchro spring/holder in my 1975 FJ40 4-speed transmission (1st/2nd synchro) . Spector does not have one in stock and the online resources point to part #33390-36012 which I ordered. Its design is different than the original spring/holder. I don't think it will correctly seat in the synchro so can anyone tell me if I'll have an issue? Is there a source for the proper spring/holder?

Thanks,

So maybe I'm going about this wrong. I know my transmission is not original to the vehicle, therefore trying to find the proper synchro spring is proving to be problematic. I need to determine what year model I have.

I need to determine the year of my transmission so does anyone know what years the transmission did not have an inspection plate? Mine does not. That's one clue.

The second question. It's obvious I have a two-detent holder/spring. What years did the transmission have this vs. the one-dent key. I can't find any good references on this question (which I believe holds the answer).

Yea ordering parts successfully is usually easier if you know what unit you are ordering parts for. So is it even a Toyota LandCruiser tranny - there are adapters to put in all sorts of tranny. I'd be looking see if there is some sort of plate between the bell housing and the tranny. Take pic's and measurements look for casting #'s

That part is not the correct part as it does not have any detention spots.

How long have you owned this transmission. Possibly it was rebuild by a shop at some point and they used something they had on hand that fit. The part number shown is the only part number I find for the four speeds imported to the US by Toyota 19/73-9/83. Possible Toyota up dated the parts and updated the number. Did you have a different part number.

This is not the spring for the syncros towards the front. This is further back. Not a spring but a holder. While is shows them as a separate piece it only comes as complete part. That whole assembly is 3330636015 and shows a available. Would search for them used. Site I used shows $600 in Japan which doesn't include taxes and shipping.

Well, I analyzed this thing to death and have come to terms that the new spring/holder 33398-36012 is an appropriate replacement. The orientation of the springs/holders are not the same as the original but once I got past that I can now see how the new springs actually work better.

I've put together a crude drawing to show the difference. In the original design, two of the detention areas only held one spring/holder and therefore had slop and room to possibly move or create issues (my theory is that was the case of the break). With the newer part number and orienting it differently, each detent area has two spring/holders and therefore no room for movement.

At least in my mind the theory seems solid.

Documented for the next poor sole that looks as the spring/holder and says they're different and won't work.

Pictures are include also but hard to depict. First photo is the original stock holder. Second is new design.
