4-Pinion Diff snapped and I'm Stranded!

No, I didn't post on Rising Sun. I don't have any affiliation with RS, but I'm guessing you're going to suggest it. I wouldn't mind getting more connected with some others to go wheeling here in CO. I'm usually going by myself (i'm the only capable truck) and then I find myself in this type of situation.
My truck is in the mountains near Bailey -- Slaughterhouse.

I used to wheel all the time alone, but now I never do after some scary situations where I was severely stuck or broken down in BFE...typically with a girl I was trying to impress

I have gone out with RS and had a blast. It's a great group of friendly and knowledgeable folks, and I highly suggest getting involved with them. Life has been crazy since my snow run with them, but it's going to slow down a bit and I intend to go to a meeting and officially join.

We'll be there tomorrow to help you out. Are you sure it's the diff and not something else?

Sorry to hear that
I have a question , what comes in ARB kit? I’m reading every one want to put ARB in their front diff, but what are they planning to put in(beside air lockers) ?

Mgilvan,
I'm looking to get the ARB for the front. I might as well, if I'm going to have to replace the whole diff, even if I just need a new ring gear (I guess their pretty hard to find individually).
Here is some more info...

Call Slee and set up an after hours drop off for tomorrow night. http://www.sleeoffroad.com/

x2 :bounce: They set up mine the day they received it and it was shipped back to me 3 days later.

I will probably take my truck to Slee after I get it back home and can pull the front diff. I'll take the front diff to Slee to save some labor $$$$ and have them install an ARB locker and new gears, most likely.
In the meantime, I'll be driving in 2WD. I hope that's not bad...

Awesome, RobRed! Great, detailed instructions. That's what I needed this whole time. Thanks!

No not bad, just keep the CDL locked up. Stan thanks for leading the crusade up there!

and FWIW I also had Slee's shop install my locker, they did the whole thing though but iirc the labor of pulling the diff then reinstalling it wasn't that much more. You may want to just have them quote you both ways before you spend all weekend on your back- those guys are fast, they've done it 100 times, and they have lifts and air tools.

Has anyone installed the part time conversion kit? I did this on a quadratrac equipped jeep to convert from fulltime 4wd to part time before with great results. Or could just the front hubs be purchased and all that would be required was to unlock the hub and engage the CDL?

should reprogram your ecu also ? so it knows its part time 4WD?

I had that though too, but nothing in the 4WD is electronic. VSC, however, is and VSC does manipulate power as part of it's algorithm so in theory you would be partially compromising one of the trucks safety features.

I can't read the text in the posted pic, but there is a heading that says "The ABS Issue". Don't know what that's about.

And... looks like it's pretty invasive to the T-Case. Wondering what that means for off-road durability/reliability.

I swiped those from their facebook account. They have some very interesting swap kits including GM LS swaps and portal axles for 100 series.

Here is the article in a PDF.

I wouldn't worry about being invasive. Rebuilding a transfer case if relatively easy. One of our friends from down under did this swap on his truck last year. Maybe he has some input.

My 'invasive' comment wasn't so much concern of difficulty as about degrading the longevity and reliability of the factory design.

First page of instructions says ABS will be disabled when freewheeling. Not sure why, but that would be a deal killer IMO. Edit: read the other pdf and it says IFS ABS isn't affected.

I like the idea, just not sold on the application. Seems like a traditional 2WD/4WD/4Lo t-case would be the more robust way do go.

It could be argued that less spinning parts could increase longevity.

ABS won't work becuase the CV's aren't spinning and the magnetic sensors rely on that.

There website stated in the IFS trucks sensor was in hub..so maybe someone will state that done it.

I like this idea of the 2wd.

In looking more closely, you're right. The differential assembly appears to be replaced by a solid spool. So no torque at all goes to the front unless the center lock is engaged. Which therefore implies that 4WD and locked center must be simultaneous. I think I'd rather have the option of an open center in 4WD.

Again, like the 2WD option, just not the application. Do 105's have a 'traditional' 2WD/4WD/4Lo t-case or are all 100's full-time 4WD.

The one feature other than remote start I miss about my SLT Sierra, was the options of 2wd, AWD, 4wd, 4lo. I like the driveability of 2wd for day to day. Wear on parts and fuel savings aren't enough to cover the cost of the kit. I'd like to just install the front hubs if nothing else.

VSC is not an issue on 98-99 trucks lol ;)
But I’m sure the mpg will improve
Btw who need ABS lol :p
:cheers::beer:
