Coming down the list of things that are wearing out on this old girl is the state of my pinion seals. And seeing that after upgrading to a larger 33' tire the power isnt there anymore. Hoping that by installing 4.11 gears it should make the hills a little more tollerable.

Completley unrelated though, I hear they might improve my lower gearing for better grip/speed when wheeling:steer::zilla:

So, who has got a line on some FJ60 diffs? my budget is pretty low, but if they dont leak ill take em!

early gear sets will work . you might have to open the bolt holes up a bit . and your pinion flange might not match up with the later d-shafts but there are options for that as well .

If somebody knowledgeable can confirm that it would work, I would swap you my rear 4.10 for your rear 3.73. Can't help you on the front tho. Not sure if the entire 3rd can swap, as my truck is full floater and yours is semi. Ya, not sure about anything really, but maybe someone else knows? Maybe just the ring and pinions can be swapped?

Alternatively, I can just hijack your thread and ask if anyone has any 3.73 collecting dust :P

The 80 series rear third should be a direct swap..

As for the cable locked axles, that fad has faded quickly, large cogs that make engagement slow, lack of parts support plus the cost..I think they are unique and cool, even not a bad deal for a complete package of axles..for say 2500..

Also the cable lockers are s*** if you actually wheel hard . The long spline part of the axle where the engage/disengage part happens is easily twisted causing them to be inoperable . If you are considering lockers stay away from lunchbox ones as well . Not worth the time it takes to put them in .
Selectable is nice for a street driven rig/daily driver but either of the two things mentioned above will cause you downtime at some point . ARB or grizzly full carrier lockers are tough as would be one of these.

Had a really good chat with Steve over at EBI Cruisers yesterday about gearing, turbos and lockers.

What we eventually settled on were either 4.11's or 4.88's. For me, Im thinking the latter could be best for the direction I want to take this cruiser (wheeler/overland camping thing).

4:88's a 33" tires will slow you down a lot on the road. You'll be cruising at about 75kph.

Will I have to do any modifications?
If you use an 80 third from 91-92 then it should go in the rear diff pretty easy with all the appropriate bits . If you try to use one from a 93-97 they are all full float so there are no c-clips in there . The center pin bushing could be a bit different or the side gears might be as well so you might have to use the ones from your 60 when you pull them out . if you are using one of them in the front it should be no problem . The 8" ring gear will not fit your housing . You can only use the rear gear sets from an 80 in a 40 or 60 the front is not compatible .

Did 80's from those years come with the E locker?

Guess I cant have 80 front and rear then, whats another option thatll swap in (and maybe have a locker):steer:

No e-locker for 91-92 us models . Lockers and full float rears came in 93 . (along with a few other things) If it was me , I'd go with a grizzly locker I think , Try to find a couple of fine spline 4.11 thirds and get the rear one first . A rear locker will increase your traction a lot . Drive with just that for a bit first and then decide if you want to do the front as well . I think those grizzly lockers were fairly reasonable the last time I checked . They are similar to a full carrier detroit . Lock when torque is applied and release under deceleration allowing the wheels to spin independently of each other . Takes a bit to get used to , but they are stronger than most other options . (detroits that is , not a lot of experience with yukon's version yet)

Good little read..

Some cruiser guys including Metal tech have dumped the e lockers due to failure and gone ARB..

Although I have never owned a truck with aftermarket lockers except my factory locked 80, I would say select able locker in the front is a good idea and in the back for daily driver.

I would agree 4.88's would be too much gearing for on the road driving with 33 inch tires . they would be good if you were running 37's . You would need to Spring Over your rig if you were going to try to fit those . I would be suspect taking advise from anyone who makes money on selling parts . there is a conflict of interest when it comes to your wheeling capabilities and their perceived ideas which will benefit you . You can do a lot more without having to buy most of the things supplier would recommend . IE 4.11's came stock in certain models . Find some of those , keep your eyes open and you'll find some cheap . On a budget , the last thing you should look at are e-lockers and re-gearing with new gear sets . If I had had some one to help me figure out the direction I was wanting to go with my rig before learning the hard way (the expensive way) I would be much farther ahead .
