I am going to be on the western slope poking around for a few days prior to our event. I am planning to be at the super secret camp site early to mid afternoon on Thursday. My HAM handle is KD0UGR and my cell phone is 303-478-5729.

I will be leaving Morrison Thursday mid morning. Should be at the super secret site around 4pm.

I live in Albuquerque so feel free to ask questions about places to camp near here, places to eat, things to see if you're spending any time here. I will be heading up to Ouray Thu. AM so I can lead the caravan from here. I think it's about a 6 hour drive from Alb. to Ouray.

There are a couple KOAs in/near ABQ. Plus there are a couple campgrounds on some indian reservations next to small lakes north and south of town. And there is a State Park with camping just off the highway that goes from ABQ toward Durango (and then Ouray)

Marcfj60: where's the best primitive camping in red river, nm? We are stopping there for a few days prior to Ouray. Also going to hit the Valle Vidal and Little Costillo. Any suggestions?

I'm working the midnight (9:45pm-5:45am) shift Wednesday night into Thursday morning. I'll catch a few hours of sleep then head out. Seems like there's a decent group of us on the front range leaving around then. I'll PM everyone and we'll coordinate something.

Sounds good. I can hold off or leave earlier, so let me know. I'm pulling the Beast trailer, so won't be driving like Loud...

I've never camped there but generally dispersed camping is allowed right off any forest road and on most BLM land. Check the Forest website prior to heading out to make sure it's not closed (due to fire danger) and find out their rules about dispersed camping. There are very likely to be fire restrictions of some sort. We have several Forest regions and districts and they all have their own rules about dispersed, primitive camping. The Travel Management process has been wreaking havoc on our motorized access here in NM and the greenies and their lawyers outnumber the 4wd and ATV folks and their budgets.

If you are heading west on I-40, I'd recommend skipping Albuquerque. Instead, head north at clines corners and go to Santa Fe. It will save you distance and time!

Problem with this is that if you are headed to Ouray, 550 is the most direct route from SAF or ABQ. Santa Fe to 550 is a very long about way.

No one mentioned it but stop by and say hi to Cruiserdan on your way through ABQ. Alameda exit (2nd to last one out of ABQ on I-25).

:)

I live in Denver.....
EDIT: I'll be doing my usual route which is 285 over Kenosha Pass down to 50, then turn off the pavement in Cimarron to Owl Creek Pass to 550.

Santa Fe is neat to see if you have the time. But if you're in a time crunch, it won't save any travel time. You would either have to backtrack to 550 just north of Albuquerque or take 85 north to 64 and then west to Bloomfield to meet up with 550 or stay on 84 to 160 and head west to Durango to meet up with 550. The 85/64/160 routes are not very direct and much slower (but more scenic). So I would recommend that you do not take the Santa Fe detour unless time permits. I-40 to Albuquerque and then 550 through Durango really is the fastest and most direct route.

Google maps says it takes 5 hours from my house in NW Albuquerque to Ouray. Santa Fe to Ouray is 5 1/2 hours. Clines Corners to ABQ or Santa Fe is about an hour either way.

any of your tech gurus out there know of an app that will track multiple devices (phone, pad, pod, etc.) on one map?

For those of us making a long trek, it may be interesting to track everyone converging onto one location. :meh:
