Stock gears. Tune up is all fresh. That's a good point these engines do not move a lot of air. I might try new cats and see. Anything worth s shot lol
Get some gears and you will be fine. 5.13's would be perfect for you. I had a set of 33" tires with 4.88's and was frequently accused of having the fastest 3FE on earth. It would keep up with the 1FZ's from a dig. The 35's really drug it down a lot more than anticipated.

You think 5:13's with 33's? I do not hate the idea of regearing but right now at 75mph I'm at 2400rpm, I like that. Lol If I regear I'll add I LS to the rear.

I thought those were 35's. No, 33's=4.88. Ya some kind of locker/traction aid would change your life. I have ARB air lockers in mine, and it's amazing where this thing will go with them locked. Well, when the work. Stupid air leaks.

Edit: rolling start with 33's.

Everyone on here that has the rare and ultimate 3FE equipped 80 post here, and don't forget to mention any 3FE specific junk you've done!

Hopefully this will make it easier to find other 3FE owners to ask for help, etc. when that rare problem arises!

RE-Edit: aw hell, chat away, just give me enough info to compile it to a "database" type arrangement so that I can make a thread with everyone who has done what and who just owns the beastiest 80's

Vehicle: 1991 and 1992 FJ80's

Location: South Central North Carolina (Right near Uwharrie Nat'l Forrest)

3FE Junk: 1) Custom 2.5" Exhaust (pics to come)
2) De-smog (in progress, write-up to come)

3FE Issues: Coolant Loss (plastic tank crack, suspected rear heater and engine bay by-pass hoses)

Got my 1st fj80 in 1/1/18. '91 from what I can tell bone stock. No rust. 283k. Lots of leaks. Engine sounds great. Granny shifts good. Wondering where to start. I'm in Tucson is there any clubs etc. Down here? New to cruisers and looking for friends and resources

Anyone know the best deal on gears for a 92? Seems like the gears might lessen strain on the transmission and improve MPG?

I use ECGS. They send you assembled thirds in buckets, you install and send your old ones back to get the core charge removed. No down time, back on the road the same day. I think it's around $550 per third total for a regear (more for a locker), and they come with a 5 year warranty. Of course, it's a lot cheaper to do them yourself if you can. RING AND PINIONS

Zuk is probably the most knowledgable gear installer on the planet, and he documents every build. You send your thirds to him, he regears and sends them back. This is the best option if you have time and want the best setup possible. Toyota Gear Install Harrop

Yes, 4.88 with 33" tires. It's also fairly light. ARB front bumper, no winch, single battery, clean interior, etc. That helps a lot.

Good to know. This is the route I plan on taking, 33" tires and keeping the weight as low as possible within reason. It's strange to me how some people don't seem to have any issue with adding 1000lbs to their vehicle, lol.

Nice, thanks for the info. $500 for the gears to DIY isn't that bad. Did you notice a change in gas mileage with the re gear? I'm thinking 4.88 and an aussie locker would be a big improvement for the $.

Buy the FSM. A hard copy. After flipping through this thing it's worth every penny and more. You can probably get the manual online but trying to reference it on a computer is so much worse than a real book IMO.

For sure. I don't know what ECGS charges for our thirds, but for Tacoma's it was $550 for THEM to regear it, with a 5 year warranty. You'd have to call Zuk and see what he charges, that might be the best deal and he will set them up perfectly and prove it with a million pictures.

Looks like ECGS is about $250 per ring and pinion and $215-240 for an install kit, so maybe it won't save that much money to DIY after all. Better talk to Zuk this spring.

Ken Francisco is THE Gear God. He has installed more Harrops than anyone else in North America.

Worth the effort to have Ken do it right.

Be patient, be proud and deal with the craftsman that will build your diff.

FNG checking in for the first time. 1992 with 212 on the clock. Bone stock except an upgraded stereo. Having issues with CEL due to missing O2 sensors. Would this cause the EFI relay to overheat and fail? I've has 2 non starting issues and learned to keep spares on hand. Always starts after replacing the EFI relay. I would rally like to find the source of the problem and fix the O2 sensors. Any one know a good old school Toyota mechanic in the Columbus, OH area? MPG is only 10-11, so it is only a weekend driver. Love driving the LC but only have a 200 mile range. My daily driver is a 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser. I really love my OLD FJ, but it needs some help before I can take it on an overland journey.
Thanks for the great forum.

The relay overheats because the connections are corroded (usually). This is the fix- EFI Relay Pics 4 U

I'm a hillbilly, so I just replaced the wires that run to the relay with some slightly heavier gauge wires from the car stereo section at walmart and used blade connectors to attach the relay. It's been like that for years without issue. That said, o2 sensors will sure help out your mileage, however depending on how much armor and weight you are hauling, tire size, etc your fuel economy numbers are not abnormal.

I just got my 92 late last year maybe since October. I am in Aurora Colorado and new to the toyota scene, since I always had jeep cherokee, 4 of them in the past. So far I had my alternator go out and I replaced that, changed cab lights to led, not a big change. I also took apart the driveshaft and greased it due to the clunk. Projects for the future are front brakes and redoing the birfield which I will do when it's alot warmer. Will do spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor this weekend due to a shudder and fluctuation of power.
When I first got this vehicle, I asked myself what giant hunk of trouble did I get myself into, but since I am train to work on larger vehicles and I have the tools, I then said why not?
