3D Printed Key Fob - Bye Bye Cracked OEM Shells

For my situation, its not breakage, but that you have a really cool product! The remote is just boring, I like shape of the 100 series you designed, just as a fob, maybe the number "80" embossed on the back?

Oh, well that's awesome! Is this the remote for the 80 series? (image on left with Toyota Logo) http://amzn.to/1XsG9ca

If that's it I think I found one on ebay I could buy to get a prototype going. I think I can come up with something a little more aesthetic than the OEM case.

The 80 series came with a number of remotes. The ones pictured in the amazon link are not what the "stock" remote looks like in my experience, however I believe some have the remote on the left. Mine is a single button remote.

As far as breaking, the loop used to connect the fob to your keychain is the area that has broken on both of my remotes.

I like these however there is something that isn't clear. You don't have to have a transponder key if you have the FOB in your shell. You can have plain old key on a keychain with the FOB. I ran a regular steel key with no transponder with a factory key FOB with the key portion cut off for years. And you can run the transponder keys without a FOB if they are programmed. Our spare set of keys was a Camry key (programmed to our 100) on a keychain without a FOB.

The 80 keys and FOBs are separate and there is no transponder in them.

Here is mine, I actually replaced it with a new Isuzu one off eBay

Ok thanks guys. This will require some investigating. I think I need to drum up the most common types and start a poll in the 80 section. I had a hell of a time finding what the remote was for the 80 and now I see why... because there isn't just one! This will be on my short list of to-do's, but it'll probably have to wait until after Hundreds in the Hills in July. ;)

Thanks for this clarification. I approached this very conservatively. Not being familiar with the distance limits of the factory system I wanted to roll this out with the instructions that you should use a transponder key. I've now had a few people use my shells (or have previous experience with other shells) with a plain metal key and no issues. I'll consider revising my info so this is clear as an option. I just really don't want anyone to freak out that their car won't start after putting their FOB into my shell. I don't think it's an issue unless you have an excessively long keychain.

I'm going to play with it some. I have a 100 series drivetrain that I'm putting into a 80 chassis with a 40 body. I'm hoping I can somehow bypass it as I'd like to be able to have a key without a transponder. But I have two 100 keys with transponders. My only issue is I can't program more at home with the 900 step process.

Put me down as another 80 owner interested if you create a new housing for this type of fob. Kinda hard to see in these pictures, but the shell on mine is cracked all over the place.

Order received and should ship out soon!

80 folks: I haven't forgotten about you! I'm tracking the various styles and will try to make a few prototypes if I can get my hands on a couple of the examples. Please keep any input coming.

Color updates:
1. I have received a yellow version, which I will soon add to the site.
2. I will start offering a plain white version which can be spray painted any color you like! General plastic spray paint seems to adhere well and last because it soaks into the material a little bit.

So mine arrived today and I put it together. I used the little ring attached and put it on my stock key that has the guts removed obviously. Car wouldn't start. I used a bigger key ring and that allowed the FOB to drop down closer and work. I by no means am complaining, I'm just commenting in case someone runs across this.

Interesting, thanks for the feedback. This is the kind of info I want to gather. I intended this key fob shell to be used with the transponder key so that a "no start" was not a concern, but a few folks have used it with a plain metal key with success. I definitely believe the plain keys require some caution with your key ring arrangement.

I'm surprised you're using your remote key with the internals removed. Do you have another key you can use? I'd suggest a transponder key which can be bought relatively cheap and programmed to your ignition.

I only used the empty remote key to mess around with it. My other key should be here today.

Hey guys. Update: Limited Edition HIH6 shells now available!

I haven't forgotten about you 80 series folks! Just need more time to dig into it and gather data on which remotes are most common.

@PabloVTA @TacticalAnt @FloydtheDog @GA Trevor @heckler

I just bought a two button 80 series remote for design/testing. I'm trying to track down a cheap 1 button version like what's shown in Pablo's pic above, but best I can find is $60 so far. If anyone has an extra 1 button remote and shell they'd be willing to send me temporarily for testing I'll give you a heavily discounted (75% off?) fob shell out of the deal! ;)

PM if any of you 80 guys want to take me up on that.

i'd bite, lemme search the tool box for my old one and I'll get your address...

FYI: ORANGE IS SOLD OUT as of 10:50pm PT tonight.

You guys love the orange, apparently. I can't keep em in stock as quickly as you place orders! I can ship existing orders right now and will get more orange on their way ASAP. Lead times are generally 2 weeks so anyone that places an orange order in the next few days will have an approximate ship date of late August.

Awesome, let me know. I started working on the two button ISUZU version this weekend. It's a little tricky, but shouldn't be a problem after a couple prototypes.

80 SERIES FOLKS... Preference on COLOR: Orange, Black or other?

i'm still diggin for the damn thing also...

Got my orange unit last evening. Great product, fast shipping and all of the hardware including the allen wrench were included. Nice job Andy!
