not really when you consider this is what is cracking the heads and the pre chambers...
how many 3Bs have you pulled apart with NO crackes in the head or cracked prechambers?
for me, i have pulled a lot apart and almost all have cracked heads...

Wayne, so are you saying you pulled apart a running motor, to find it had a cracked head? What was it doing exactly? Whats the head made out of? All that a crack head means to me is it got crazy hot, I just think its cool that from what you've said these are the least tank diesel motors toyota has made and look how good they are, I rarly see VW diesels with 500000.

A pyro is going in next week for sure!!! Even though my rig rarly sees 3000, lol

Unlike some other Toy 4 banger diesel engines, many 3B's will run for years this way...and no one the wiser, till they are pulled apart.

yep, i would love to guess how many 3Bs i have pulled apart but i have lost count years ago...
i used to rebuild the 3Bs that i pulled thinking that i could save hassle this way, i was wrong. the bottom ends are extremely strong but the heads would kill the rebuild...
cheers

yep, till a cracked prechamber drops into the piston hole and grenades there taking out the piston and the cylinder wall...
or till one day you are driving along and suddenly you loose coolant because those cracks finally got too big and let go...
i used to think the 3B was a work horse engine but not anymore. they are no better than any other Toyota engine, actually much worse...
cheers

At least I know someone that can hook it up with a good diesel swap when the time comes, lol.

People that are constently rebuilding engines seeing rediculous problems like heads and s*** come to these conclusions, not to say you arn't right but my friends dad always does that too, he hates everything. It kinda funny really. You say, you used to think the 3b was a work horse, but they are much worse than any other toyota engine? That says alot for toyota engines in my book. I prolly bought my rig for not a hole lot less then what it cost in 86 this tread is depressing me.

i guess with what i posted i will never sell that old BJ60 sitting in y yard...

what you need to know is there will be cracks in the head and precups. if a person continues to drive their 3B hard it will fail. but if you change the driving habits now and install a pyro you can extend the life of the 3B for years.

do a hot coolant test, a compression test and a leak down test, if all come back good then no need to worry.

cheers

While it has it's warts we can agree to disagree then.

I think the 2LT's prepensity to blow head gaskets when stressed is a much greater issue.

I would not hestitate to jump into a stock 3B powered Cruiser and drive across the country, over a stock 2LT powered vehicle any day...unless I know the head has been pulled, checked, head gasket replaced and head torqued good on the 2LT...

hummm, the first one i sold here now has an addition 40,000 km on it with only the pilot bearing siezed...
the red LJ71 with 160,000 km has been cranking peaks of 20 psi and huge amounts of fuel for the last few months with no problems. it even pulled a military trailer on the local Ruby-con, driving there and back with no problems.

any motor Toyota puts out i will drive long distances as long as i do the tests before i leave...

we agree to disagree, agreed.

All machinery has its goods and bads. I'd rather have a bad diesel than a good gas and for sure I'd rather have a toyota diesel than a domestic. Now which toy diesel is the best one out there? All will have probs. I think the 3b with a nickel head is great if you don't have the 10g's to put in something else. It is showing its age now adays but it doesn't have all the s***ty electronics that break down 200km away from paved roads either.

The worst thing you can do to any engine is shabby oil change intervals and overheating like wayne said. Heat kills engines big time!!!

Plus lets face it pyros are cool but then again I just love gauges

Cheers

Yup, don't get me wrong. I think the engine has potential. I simply disagree that the 3B is classed the same as the early 2L-T's. Not a hope...in my opinion.

Go to this site for tons of reading on the 2.4 and 2.8 engines. Read about the head problems. Fix it, and all reports seem to indicate they go for years, sipping fuel.

I have had high exhuast temp well into the too high zone with no smog smoke behind me. I would not say the smoke test is accurate. Pyro is the only way.

everyone should have one. for 150-200 CAD and one hour to install. best money spent.
so you can stay  and not  you engine will be ;)

I find it

in less than 150 USD .. is VDO with 12 feet of sender unit .. and I'm agree is the best way.

But I'm try to install it on one day, and I can't .. ! you need to weld little cap to you exhaust pipe and I haven't welder in my home .. :dooh:

my kit came with a clamp set up for the exhaust, just drill and clamp. worked great.

Eric Winkworth said:
why weld? don't you just tap it a hole?

yeap a hole .. but the thread comes in the cap that you need to weld, I read the instructions :D

i love it  just keep hack'n the 3B, that way there will be LOADS of spares and complete engines for years to come.... they just keep getting cheaper and cheaper :grinpimp:

by the time i have to change one out, i should have 100! :grinpimp:

soon it'll be cheaper to swap 3B's than NA v8 crap! man...... i love canada! :) thanks crushers! ;)
