Machine shop told me one valve spring was broken, so I brought in one valve spring...he said i meant you need all 16 new valve springs and guides...He could of said that exactly at the start.. Almost a month from Toyota back ordered and very expensive. My new guy got them to me in three days for a lot less and they are OEM parts.

Might happen more than we think. This and one other came out of a running 3b. Didn’t notice any performance difference after replacing them. Where they were broken they had worn together like it had been running that way a long long time.

Side note if you have a 3b stored for a long time or any motor take the rockers or rocker rail off. You don’t want a couple springs depressed for years longer than others.

Got my new OEM lifters from Mr. Toyota..my new supplier of parts is selling me lifter springs inner and outers plus valve guides for less than half of toyota and they are OEM. Took 3 weeks plus for the lifters and back ordered valve springs, I canceled the valve springs and my new guy will get me the parts in less than 7 days. Toyota parts direct..View attachment 2007165View attachment 2007167
Doing the same on a 2H. Can you please share who you buy your rebuild parts from? I am the person who bought Jim’s brown HJ60 and drove it to Dallas, TX.

Toyota parts direct right here in Canada, some times I get some stuff from Australia. You would do well buying from Canada with the dollar.

Could the engine of run OK due to the in and outer spring set up?

Just finished pulling all the frost plugs, my machine shop bill for hot tanking, beat blasting head, 3 position valve grind, installation of provided valve guides, seals and valve springs, precups and head surfaced 775.00.

Found a little pocket of casting sand in behind valve lifter access panel, hard to believe it never was dislodged after all the miles it had been driven. Would of taken out the oil pump for sure. Price is starting to surpass my initial gauge of build cost, but I am very happy so far.

Next Wednesday I will be pulling piston liners and installing new ones, need to pull oil skirt cooling nozzles and inspect and make sure clean, plus gain access for pulling the sleeves.

What colour should I paint the block, thinking bright kawaski green, orange or Pink...tell me what colour you think the head and block should be painted.;)

Looking Good... I recognize that garage.

Thanks again for the latch and the visit. I look forward to connecting up with you again :D

Glad to see you were wearing your requisite Vancouver Island safety toe flip flops. As for colour
I’ve always wondered what the ‘official’ Toyota engine colour is? I think the only colour I’ve seen is Black.
The Australian’s seem to paint the 12HT’s blue, but I don’t think that’s a good choice.
I’d go for Red.

I was talking with Graham and I think he and I believe most of the 3Bs we seen other than the 13BTs was a lighter gray.

No pictures but its the super slow 3b build page, should of called it that..

Big thanks to Keith C for hand delivering a 3B crank, it went in yesterday for magnaflux testing and if it makes it past that inspection it will be polished.

Machine shop pointed out the splines that drive the oil pump are pretty rounded over and it should be replace, so another added cost to the build..

Finally back into the engine..my buddy is dropping off his home made sleeve puller/installer.

Planning on liners re re, crank install, piston pins and con rods install on new pistons. Fuel pump head installed( once I buy oem head gasket).

Found a new cam for the 3b made in Italy, hope to save a few bucks for that part.

Lastly I need to address the 3 rocker arms replace or grind, anyone have a few of these kicking around.?

Thanks for the video on the phone Rob, but it is smaller than a dime! Something went wrong with the
text thread. Maybe resend it, it might arrive full size. Glad to see you back at it.

Liners are such a better option than scrapping a block because there’s not enough left to machine the bore larger. I’m sure there’s pros and cons, but I really prefer a truly rebuildable design.

I scrapped my original rear axle because the bearing surfaces on both shafts were badly pitted. In contrast, the FF I replaced it with uses taper bearings with replaceable races which will ensure it’ll last.
