305/65/18s on +20mm Success!!!

I’m going to test fit a 285/70/18 RG and 295/70/18 AT3 XLT this week. I think the 285 might be narrow on my 18x9 wheel since it has bead lock ring which might not have enough scrub protection. My 34.5x12.50 float on highway now and don’t like that feeling. I can tell my truck fights a little keeping it straight. I wonder if the 305 would be pretty much the same.

The 18mm offset you have is less wrong for larger diameter tires. Meaning you'll potentially see less symptoms with the tires you have now versus worse symptoms for the smaller diameter tires you're proposing.

To some extent, narrower tires may help.

Wow, so much I don’t know about this subject. So you’re saying I would be better off with a 295/70/18 or a 305/65? If I stick with my current 34.5x12.50 I will need to go the Nitro 4:30 route but then I still have the KDSS issue. Would either size above still cause me to need regearing? I’ll dump the money if I have to but my other concern is longevity of aftermarket gears.

Refer to post #28 to help explain how offset is correlated to overall tire diameter

IIRC, you have a 2019? There's no huge need for gears with the new 8-speed tranny. It has stump pulling gearing in low gear for days. To deal with the tall higher gears, use sport mode and set it to S7 to lock out 8th gear.

It is the MY19. I’m heading to Discount tire Wednesday to see if the 295/70 clears the KDSS and lower sway bar link. I found the Toyo Open country AT ll to be lighter and slightly narrower than the Cooper At XLT. It seems the Toyo has better reviews across the board.

I am interested to hear how this turns out.

I definitely noticed a tracking difference going from 275/70r18 to 305/65r18s (11" to 12.2" width, 33.16" to 33.6" diam). The 275 did track better on broken and rutted pavement, but of course they were different tread patterns and brands (KO2 vs WildPeak AT3).

I am not sure how much you plan to run your rig in the ice, but I am not a fan of that Toyo tire, due to its crappy snow and ice performance. I pulled them off of a 4Runner, because they were scary in both sloppy wet snow and also icy conditions. KO2s went on after that, which did much better. WPs do well too. May not be a concern for your use, but figured I'd mention my experience.

We rarely see snow in Knoxville and very unlikely it will see snow or ice in the near future. How is the Toyo in rain, something we get a lot of and the Ko2 is just ok in it

I believe they did fine in the rain; I don't remember any hydroplaning issues. I know my Toyota dealer said tread life was good, and they did seem to be quiet and track well on the highway.

Just did a quick search and it appears other aren't convinced they are great in snow or rain...

I also checked many tire sites and video reviews on the Toyo Open country AT2, Nitto Ridge Grappler, Cooper AT3 XLT, etc and they all are either great or horrible. 🙄

Proper offset is correlated with overall tire diameter. You're forgetting that for 35s, optimal offset are lower than someone running a 33.5" tire. Or 31" tire. So your original 50mm offset was wrong for a 35. and ~29mm far more correct.

Approximate ideal offsets, tire diameter vs offset:
31.5" = ~60mm (stock)
32.7" = ~50mm (rock warrior with 285/65r17)
33.5" = ~42mm (projected)
34.5" = ~32mm (projected)

For someone running a 33.5" tire, 20mm is out of spec. Hence the pulling.
@TeCKis300 thanks for info on ideal offset. I was considering 295/65/r18s on my factory wheels. However, 295/65/r18 from what I can tell is only available as Goodyear Duratracs, so not a very common size. So, I’ve settle on what I believe is a sweet spot for what I want to run for my setup. Falken WP 305/65/r18s with 1” spacers on factory 18” bbs HE wheels. I’m installing OME UCAs as part of the BP51 lift I’m doing in tandem. See any glowing issues within this setup?

Ship it!

Lol. I’d like to avoid cutting. Will this be possible with this setup?

You shouldn’t need to cut anything. The front mud flap will likely need to go and you’ll need to reposition the front of your wheel liner - or reshape it with a heat gun.

Noice. Those are going to be some meaty beefy rollers!

There's some other notable rigs that run that size and had good fitment. Should fit with a little work, but Falken AT3Ws do run a tad larger. Don't let that scare you as it'll be worth the effort. Boils down to some plastic massaging, and alignment to balance clearance against the body mount and KDSS bar.

did you end up going with this set-up? I'm thinking about the same

I did and very happy. Have had it for over a 18 months and no issues.

@McC13LC It appears that the Falken Wildpeak 305/65r18 is only available in a load range F currently. Is that what you are running? How is the ride?

I have been running 306/65R18 KO2s for a few years. Pretty happy. For my next set, will probably go 295/70R18 or 285/75R18. Slightly taller & skinnier would be better.

I've seen them listed on the web in a few spots. I wonder if it's remaining stock and they are no longer producing the load range E in that size 🤔
