Did the 1st generation 4runner ever have 3 point rear seat safety belts either in the US or another market? Anybody changed their 2-point out to 3?

I believe there was a kit offered to adapt the rear belts to a 3-point system. The upper belt attached in that threaded hole in the rollbar. It's not a metric thread, it's 7/16" x 20 tpi, which was a DOT requirement for seatbelt bolts at the time.

How is it I can remember this stupid trivial stuff, yet I often can't remember my own phone number?

Thanks. Was the kit a Toyota one?

Yes, I believe they had to offer it at the time, but you had to ask for it. Something like that. Good luck finding one now...

I thought that was a Canadian requirement . . . if you have the owner's manual it'll tell you in there, if you don't have the owner's manual let me know and I'll see what I can do to scan it for you

My owner's manual doesn't show it.

DING! DING! DING! DING!

Correct answer. I have just such a kit in my 4Runner. I found out about it from a service bulletin a few years ago and ordered up a set. They are now unavailable.

Can you post a pic of it?

Please post the TSB#

Thanks.

Sure. I will need to dig for the service bulletin.

Note that the shoulder harness unclips from the lap belt.

I bought and installed the three points a couple of years back. They give you a shoulder harness, but it clips onto the existing lapbelt-ratchet assembly. So, there is no improvement in the rear passenger comfort (as if!) or even safety.
I spent a couple hundred bucks for this kit, but still wound up buying a 2001 Land Cruiser for, uh, the kids.
And kept the 4Runner, natch.
Here's the instruction manual.
I was disappointed, especially for what the kit costs.
The instructions also come in French, for all ya Canadians.

Thanks for all the info. This is great! If it's not to much trouble, I'd like to see a close up pic of how the shoulder belt attaches to the lap. Thanks again!

You can purchase from seat belts and swap them in. There are soe threads on yotatech that show this. I actually have a set and started doing this this past weekend. Will finish it up this week, when I get some time.

got a pair of retracking belts from a vendor on fleabay. retracker part bolted to the bottom hole of the roll bar with the upper hole bolting up to the bracket that positions the belt above the shoulder.

Mmmmkay, here's pics of '88 SR5 3-point belts.
As you can see, the updated ratcheting mechanism replaces the original mechanism, and it still sucks as bad as the original (continually ratcheting in and constricting the poor souls trapped back there).
The shoulder belt clips into a hole in the ratchet latch.
The other end of the shoulder belt bolts into a hole in the roll bar, like in the other set up.
If you're interested, I might sell mine.
