BTW, i have a couple of those t/cases sitting here behind the R141 for those that are interested. of course they are not cheap but you end up with 4.88 first with 2.29 low through what ever rear gearing you have.

no doubt what I'd do with this...

body-on resto
3.4 or 4.0 V8
Auto
Single, gear driven case
Diamond rear housing - 3.25"-3/8 tube, Full floater
Possibly Diamond front
comfy seats
bull bar
and fully prepped to get out of dodge!!

Don't skimp on the rear axle - you've got adiamond in the rough here... Might be worth the search effort to find what you really want/need.

I'd definitely go with a full floater in the rear.

When the engine finaly decides to go I will do a 3.4L V-6 swap from a Tacoma and upgrade to a R150 / 151? at that time, unless I can fiind a good one for a good price before I put in the one I have. No autos for me. I love the fuel milage of the 22re but would not mind more power for towing something.

I would not go V8, I just dont think there is room, the v6-es are already crammed in there tight enough. I like some room when I work on my trucks.

Should still be lots of life left in it, the clock is only 160-180k or so.

I did a little investigation work today on the truck with the ID codes and did a little prep work on getting it out of the snow.

I put the battery back in it today and shoveled it out a bit so I can drive it out soon.

I looked at the gear code and it said that it is a 8" rear end with 3.9:1 gears. I guess they put the 5 lug axles in the 2wd and the 6 lug in the 4wd trucks. My other 1986 2wd had 5 lug too but I have never seen it on a 4x4. I was relieved to see that the rear was a 8" and not a 7.5".

The tire size change will be a bit tall at 4.10 according to the calculator at 4Lo.com. It would ballance out better with 4.37 gears going from a 26" tire to a 28-29" tire. I really don't want to re-gear both ends when I already have two sets of 4.10 so we will have to see how it turns out. If I re-gear I will go deeper at 4.56 so I use 5th more and have more pulling power. I was hoping for the 235/75/15 tires because it is a common tire size and I have 2 or 3 sets in that size.

I will test it out before re-gearing to see if there is any difference in the tranny gears. Hopefully the gears in the 4w4 tranny will be lower.

The tranny code is W46 which I thought was a 4 speed but mine is a 2wd 5 speed. (well 4 speed now because third is out:doh:)

The rear springs are spring under and the replacement axle is SOA. I don't know if I want that much lift so I may go with a big shackle in the rear. I guess I may have to do the front first and see how it turns out and then set up the back to match.

It looks like sky mfg makes a full width SAS kit or they can make custom stuff to order which may work for my LC axle up front. Anyone have any opinions on the company/products?

On the gearing issue, most of the 4x4 minis are 4.10:1 ring and pinion and 28 inch tall 225/75/15 tires. That's what I've got in my 88 stocker, motor gets a little busy over 65 MPH but that's good because it reminds me to slow down to save gas and avoid hassles with the cops.

Check out 4Wheel & Offroad's project Clampy on Sky's stuff. Cool build, good products it seems.

I think the FJ60 axle is a mistake. Too heavy, too big (finds rocks, etc, esp. with such a small tire). You could sell it for enough to buy a mini front axle (I've gotten them for $100 to $150 USD). On my '85 mini I run a 58 inch 1988 axle out back and my stock 55 inch 1985 axle in front without issues. You can always do the IFS hub swap later if it bugs you having different axle widths. Just food for thought.

None of the roads up here are over 65mph so I am not winding up the motor like most of you in the states and therefore not using 5th as much. Most roads are 65mph with some 55mph.

The pickup solid axles are hard to find up here and will go for more $ because of supply and demand. I found one shop who has some on hand for $450. Landcruiser axles don't go for quite as much up here. He said hew would trade a LC axle + $100 so I can keep that in mind. Sometimes some parts are harder to find as we are more isolated and have a much smaller population and therfore less sources for parts.

I looked around and the gear ratios for the W56 2wd and 4wd should in theory be the same. I found a R151F tranny and bell housing and transfercase? for $700. The gearing is a bit lower but I really don't have the extra $ for that set up and I am not sure if it would be more driver friendly than the W56. Any thoughts on than tranny set up? What bolts up behind that tranny, gear driven or chain?

I am still not sure about the gearing. Right now with the 3.91 gears I am always shifting between 4th and 5th, and do not use 5th too often unless driving on flat land or down hill. I think the 4.10 would be better now, but then when I switch to a bigger tire I may loose the use of 5th again. Great milage with the 3.91's.

In theory it should be just like driving my stock pickup once I go to 4.10 and 29" tires, and I hope it is. I will try the 4.10 axle gears first and see what I think.

The R151 came in the 86-87 turbo trucks which had a gear driven transfer case. The R150 came with the 3.slow V6 and had a chain driven case behind. So I figure you could probably mix and match parts if you prefer one TC over another, but ... guess I'm old school, I go for gears. I don't have much experience driving the R series trans, but the W56 is really nice. It doesn't offer the same low gear crawl as the R151 (about 3.95:1 First in the W56 v. 5.15:1 in the R, if memory serves) but you're not going to crawl that thing anyway, right? And even if you do, you'd probably be better served by a set of low gears in the TC. Cool build, looking forward to more pics!

Tried to post a chart but did not work.

That did not post how it should have and it will not let me edit for some reason so lets try this again.

I need to double check the tranny in the shead still but I am pretty sure it is a w56-? model. Need to check to see what transfer case is bolted to it. Slow progress, still a bit cold, snow the other day, collecting parts, and it won't fit in the garage so waiting on weather.

I picked up a complete R150 and transfercase minus shifers for $50 just for the hell of it, because it was $50.

Can anyone tell me if the transfercases between the R150 and the W56 will swap straight across or do they need mods. Alos will the bell housings between these two swap?

I will stick with the w56 because for the $700 for the R151F I could buy gears or an e-locker and axle for my pickup, front end parts for the camper.

I found a parts guy who is all about pickups and his solid axles go for $450. They are just in high demand and hard to find up here.

if you do not need the 5th gear a R141 will give you 4.843 first gear and coupled with the 2.29 low range t/case then you have excellent crawl ratio.

the wife and i stopped to look at a VERY CLEAN winibago covnerted mini the other day. she loved the layout, i hated the price and with the V6 i am thinking it would be under powered and guzzle fuel. he claims it returns 18 mpg, i am leaning to a call of BS on that one.

but

it sure looked nice.

That sounds about right. My neighbor has a small Winnibago toyota motorhome. I think it is about an 18ft. His is EFI V-6, 1990's I think so it should be the 3.0L. His has a full floating alxe with dual tires on the back. I am super jellous of his. It is nice. Just the right size.

I think he said it gets about that (18mpg) in his. I can't remember if his is an auto or manual, but I think an automatic. I think that 15mpg is about bottom for these bigger toyota motorhomes in either 22R or 3.0L. Autos will get worse milage and if you are running a 18-22' motorhome with these engines you will work them a bit more.

You have to remember that these are geared taller in the axles for better milage. Which works well and helps MPG unless you are in hilly country a lot.

Also when talking motorhomes these MPG estimates and numbers are always highway mileage because who the hell drives these things in town? Nobody! Ok I do on ocation when I am working on my other vehicles and there is nothing else to drive.

My little 22RE with 3.9 gears gets 20-23mpg! Highway! @ 65mph. No inerstates up here, besides the way the roads are and driving a 20+ year old truck 75mph+ is a bit fast.

s***, maybe he was telling the truth then.
i have seen what 4play was getting i thought, no way it can get that. it was a 20 ft. a bit short in the roof for my height but deffinatly liveable. shower s***ter upper bunk etc etc.
i could see a nice 3B with land cruiser diffs moving that down the road on WVO... but $12k is too steep for my pocket book.

The W56 and R150 transfer cases are not interchangeable. Marlin Crawler sells an adapter to put the gear driven case onto the R150, but as has been said, if you are not going to be wheeling it, the chain T-case will be fine.

If you are running the 22R, then the R150 will not bolt up...

Yes I think something that size would be more around 15mpg but not bad considering what you are getting. Other motorhomes such as full size fords form 1980-1990's may be gitting only 10. Of course you can tow something with the v-8. If it is a newer RV the mpg may be better but then it is out of my price range. $12K is a lot....for me at least.

Thanks for the confirmation on the trannys / x-fer cases. That is what I thought but needed confermation. Thanks.

Updates?? Have you nailed down the drivetrain?

I have slowley been getting parts for multiple projects. This week I am finishing up my lift on my 1992 pickup so that project has been taking up most of my time latley. I am trying to get that one knocked out first because I finally have all the parts for it.

I plan on dropping in the 4x4 tranny in the camper a week or so. I am using a W56 type from an 1990's 22re. I will post some pics up soon for positive ID. I need to order a clutch alignment tool and still up in the air about a new clutch. I know it is best to do it when the tranny is out but that is more $ and I am starting to run low on funds.

I will be using my 1992 rear IFS 4.10 axle set up for the camper so the springs will go from SUA to SOA. I need to buy another pair of rear springs to cut up to beef up the springs. It has the stock pack with a bolt on 2 spring overload which seems to work ok but it is all bottomed out all the time. I am going to put some more leaves in the pack. I started to do this for my pickup and it looks great so far. Not sure on the ride yet but it revived my springs a bit. I went from a 3 leaf pack to 5 with that truck + the two overload springs which gave me 2.75" lift. I think I will do this same thing, maybe 6 springs with the camper. I also have a trail gear 4" rear spring pack with 6 leaves already in it that I could put on if I want to leave it SUA.

I found a whole 1985 truck for parts but can't put another truck in the driveway right now. Also have a guy who has solid front axles for $450 when I need one. Then I need springs and, steering linkage, brackets, etc for it. I want to do the 1992 hub rotor, break upgrade to widen the front too. When I do that I will save the parts I take off and do a rear disc break conversion on either the pickup or the camper.

I still need to gather parts for the camper so it may take a while, I don't make a lot of $. Hopefully I can sell my extra FJ60 to fund this and my other FJ60 build. I have been working on that a bit too to get it up and running so I can sell it.

Bare with me, I am slow.
