Yeah, that is the class that I am planning on taking with Josh, who does not have the merit badge yet.

Does anyone know the times for that class. And what is the age limit for certification?

No age limit. Do have to be able to do basic math without calculator, like 120/10. Other than that it's just memorization of terms and some electrical principles.

The down side to that class is it is 9-5 two different Saturdays :\ I think the 22nd of Feb and Mar 1. The flyer is on the site.

I am backing out of the class. Too many conflicts and wrong time of year. I emailed the teacher and there will be a june class likely out in independence area. FYI.

mmm June in independence.. now that's more my speed.

For dues paying TAC and TLCA members I can do a lesson or two in a much shorter time period, hour or two each, and provide you with the tools to study self paced to pass the technician class exam.

Any interest? Erik is in, he just doesn't know it till he reads this!

Definitely interested. Count me in if available - pretty wide open in FEB - - MAR is a different animal.

I was coming in to ask what band radios you were using lastyear at the Fall Crawl and figured this thread would be the place to ask. I am wanting a vehicle mount FRS/GMRSradio. I don’t really want to do the HAMthing I am not looking for a new hobby (I have enough of those). So I figure a GMRS license is $80 and coversmy family why not. I just want to makesure it will communicate with the radios you plan on using.

Thanks,

Ben

Ben, Rob and I are the only two that have a license right now but it is for ham. There are several other members working on getting theirs right now. We ran 2 meter, or 146.520 MHz last year. The tech test is very easy and only $15 for 10 years. 2 meter radio can be had brand new for less than $150. And much more versatile. I can send you study info if interested.

If you could send me that it would be great. I took a practice test and passed but guessed on a couple. i think I may look in to a dual band as the people I wheel with are more likley to use hand held GMRS than get HAM licenses.

Thanks,

Here is a link to a folder on my Google drive that contains study guide and test for Tech and General. Keep in mind the tech questions are set to change on June 30th of this year, so if you study this material, take your test before then. A new pool of quetsions will be published and the tests will change in July.

So, I have a 12 hour bus ride coming up in mid June, on the way to scout camp, and I plan on studying then. Bus should have wi-fi if there is an online test to practice.

What did you find the best study guide? I downloaded all of Colin's material.... can you focus me on what to study??

Next, when is the best way to schedule or find a test? I see the June 30 date above, so I might have to do this quickly.

Thanks,

I used hamtestonline and really enjoyed there program. They really drill it into you when you get something wrong. Passed my test with no problem.

P.S. I also highly recommend the baofeng uv-5r for a nice little handi talki. It will tune outside of the HAM bands in the 2 meter and 70cm range. On my recent trip to Chicago I was able to pull up police dispatch with it as well as any of the state and city emergency channels.
