I also posted this over in tech, but I thought there might be some local HAM's that could help me. The local radio shop has the Motorola CM200d and CM300d on rebate for $25 if you buy six or $50 individual. It appears that you can get them in either VHF or UHF configuration, but not both. I'm having a hard time sorting this out via Motorolas spec sheet and my lack of experience in this field. Would this make good mobile radio setup ?

The shop is TFMCOMM, I'm not sure if you have one in KC but they do all the police and fire radios for Topeka and Lawrence. I think I will give them a call back and ask there sales rep about this. I'm wondering if they can be programmed in vehicle or if you have to program pre sets on all of them.

Interested. I'll watch for more details as they come.

Those with radios now, are they UHF or VHF?

If six people go in on a group buy, then an extra $50 each, buys the software to program the radios.

Ill do what colin says. So if colin buys one count me in. Im old and dumb and colin is younger and smarter.. still need to study and take the test. Doh

I'm curious what half k finds out from the shop, but they look like they are preset radios where you program in the channels and can't dial in channels without the computer to program. Problem with that is if you go to a run and don't have the freq they are using as a channel on your fill, you are out of luck without your laptop and cable.

EBay is full of good used Kenwood and Yaesu single band transceivers for around $100 that you can program with Chirp and still dial in a freq outside your fill.

I'll try and do some more research on them this weekend too.

I am right behind Tornado, follow Colin's lead, except that I got signed up for a class to take the test.

Wasn't able to get a hold of the radio shop today. However, after reading some of the posts here and over in tech, I think i'm going to pass on one of these. The main reasons being the need for programming software, and the inability to tune in the field. Now, if I find out that these can somehow be unlocked for hand programming in the field, then i'm back in. I will update this thread if I find out anything good.

Get me the pn from the radio. I have geeks at the hospital that can program stuff like that and or get the software.

Are you building a repeater?

How many hams do we have that are wanting/needing mobile radios? Associated has the Kenwood TM-281A on sale. Maybe a group buy gets us a better deal?

I'm thinking about doing this two day workshop for HAM:

The funny thing is my son has already done the merit badge and probably can pass the technician test. Maybe I will outsource HAM to him. He is already my Spanish translator :)
