235 85R16s vs 255 85R16 on 16" split ring rims? (1 Viewer)

Which size would you choose for a FJ60 running 5.5" wide split rims?

If you feel so inclined please list the make and model of the tire that you'd like to use as well and thanks!

I‘ve installed 255 on 6 wide rims. No problem. I would say 5.5, even if it's just a bit thinner, is a bit too narrow. According to companies, the 255 tires must be installed on rims of at least 6.5 or 7 wide.

235 tires would be preferable but some people on Expo Portal say having it done on a 5.5 without problems (255). I would not do it… but this is me.


There plenty of good MT and AT tire in 235.

I have used 255/85r16 on my split rims for MANY years on my DD fj40

I used a set of Toyo M55's 255/85r26 (my fav choice but expensive)

I used a set of BFG 255/85r16

I used a set of Cooper S/T 255/85r16

And SS TSL 34x9.5/16

All are perfectly ok to run on the split rims

Best size for splits are 8.25r16 but are hard to find they are 34/9/16

I have seen guys up to 9.00r16 on splits as well 36/9.5/16
