Ive been working on my bad running '86 truck 22re. Timing was WAY advanced, like 40+ degrees btdc at all times. Using my service manual and ohm meter I adjusted my tps and now at idle I'm getting 5deg btdc with the two prong connector shorted, and about 12 deg btdc normal not shorted. However, as I open the thottle the timing jumps back to 40+ degrees very advanced. It will settle back to 12 deg when I let off the throttle.

Is this still a symptom of a bad or misadjusted tps? What kind of total advance should I be seeing when opening up the throttle? Any other reason the computer would want to advance my timing so much? Thanks.

Any Fixes for this? I have the exact same issue, my TPS is new and was set to the 4Crawler instructions with the TB on the bench, checked by more than one " mechanic " who said the TPS is right and they cant figure it out.

Has the head and block been decked? I forget the math/conversion for amount decked to effect on timing degree; would take a bit of research. It may be time to look into an adjustable cam gear.

The timing is supposed to advance when you give it gas. It doesn't stay at 5* where you time it shorted. In fact, it jumps to something like 13* at idle when you remove the wire.

I could have sworn there is a discussion about this in the FSM, but I can't find it.

Yes it should advance when rpms or the load increase. But what is happening is at about 1800 rpm the timing goes to full advance and it starts to random miss fire and run like crap.

If everything else is checking out try a different distributor and see what happens.
