hello all , mike here from langley BC.

so my truck (1990 22re) blew a head gasket and since i dident have 2300$(mechanics quote) i took on the job my self. i got the head off had her resurfaced and the machinist told me to use a fel pro shim. i contacted engnbldr for all the parts and possibly a new RV cam. he said his head gasket will work fine with a shim. But... i was reading on a forum in here and someone mentioned that if the head has been taken down to much its time for a new head. is a shim a permanent fix or can i expect to see another break down in the not so distant future.

thanks for any info

peace

Welcome to MUD!

Do you know how much they shaved off the head? You should be able to remove about 0.020" (20 thousandths) without any problem, and not needing any shim. Removing more than that will start to effect the valve timing.

yeah i got no idea how much has been shaved. machinist said it had been warped pretty good before and advised me to use a shim. so he probably took off over .20. im just wondering if its going to be a long lasting repair using a shim. cause engnbldr said he's got thicker head gaskets for heads that have been shaved but i already bought the shim so i figure i better use it.

thanks for the help KLF

peace

I get the feeling shims are a last resort around here....some have done it and not had good experiences with it. But IIRC (If I Recall Correctly), it's been the guys that have had right at .20 removed.

I don't have any experience with them, I've got 8 heads, so IDK (I Don't Know). Just FFT (Food For Thought), if you want a long term fix, and know how to score parts, you might want to get another head...

:flipoff2: = welcome dude! (newb welcome sign :D)

alright thanks for the info........

another question: i have removed the head and timing chain cover. is it nessesary to replace the oil pan gasket or can i just use RTV sealant instead.

If it were me, i would drop the axle out and take the pan off.

three of the trucks ive owned, the PO's had RTV on the timing cover. they all leaked.

the 22rte i did a while back, i replaced the oil pan gasket. it was cork. still holding up and no leaks.
Droping the axle was intimidating, but realy wasnt that bad once i started.bolted back in with ease.

or maybe someone can shed some light on how to use RTV or JB weld, and make it work well.

my 2 cents
