Finally got the head re-installed yesterday, I figured I'd post up some photos of the stand I built several years ago for holding a 22RE head while it's off the truck. It's kinda awkward to work on these things on a bench, especially if the intake manifold is attached. I threw this together with scrap lumber and spare hardware, I figured I'd use it once and toss it after I was done with my project. I ended up tossing it in my dead storage for the heck of it, really glad I did cuz I've used it several times since.

It is made to hold the head still while you're working on it, pulling or re-installing valves, setting the cam, cleaning, etc. It clamps into a Workmate that I bought at a yard sale for $15, very sturdy and solid.

(you can see my valves all lined up and ready to install in the muffin tray, they're soaking in fuel system cleaner)

I use some long lag bolts to fasten the head down, not very tight, just snug.

Valves & cam all installed:

Engine deck all prepped and ready, you can see the DOA steel timing guides too.

ARP head studs installed...

Head all installed. Waiting on a new OEM timing chain that I just ordered from Sam today (decided to splurge):

Same head on the same stand, 7 years ago, ready to be dropped in the truck:

Haven't started on that yet. I wanna get the engine ready to drop into the frame first.

Plan is to prep the cab, shoot all the door jambs, under hood, mount the fenders, everything except the final outside. Drop it on the frame over the engine and running gear, and get the engine running so it's able to move under it's own power. Get the interior installed, last step will be to shoot the outside of the cab.
