Hi, just new to the forum, LOVE it!
Anyway I have a 88 toyota with a 22re, it hasn't been run much over the past several years. Recently starting using it but, the engine is cutting out throughout the RPM range and occasionally the check engine light comes on(mainly when you are at a high RPM and let off the gas) soon as the engine gets back to idle the light goes off. Took it to my mechanic after trying a few things and he is also puzzled over it. Says the O2 sensor is fine, the TPS is fine, new cap and rotor, new fuel filter, plug wires are fine. I have changed the MAF settings on it but it ran fine for a couple of years after I did that(its all sealed up so, no moisture), since then nothing has been changed on it. It also misses at an idle.
Any ideas?

Look at the basics. A failed TPS or O2 sensor won't make it "cut out", it just won't run at optimum. Have you checked the ECU for any stored codes to see why the CEL keeps coming on?

It sounds to me like one of the injectors might be partially plugged. Common with vehicles that have sat for long periods.

Maybe try to run some injector cleaner through it with premium gas?

I should have mentioned that if it has anything to do with the injectors that you should change the fuel filter as well.

I put some 10% ethanol in my 4Runner a few months ago accidentally and about 40 miles later had one cylinder go completely out. It was a plugged injector and almost completely plugged fuel filter. That ethanol pulled all the rust and water out of the tank....unfortunately right into the injectors!

Good to know, I have been having problems with some of the new fuel with ethanol in my ATV, anymore if its going to sit more than a couple weeks I put Stabil in the fuel and try to stay away from the ethanol completely

The first BASIC I would do is get rid of ALL the gas in that tank. And then replace the fuel filter.

As well, cutting out means a total loss of power in my mind. Is that it OR is it just missing? You could algae in your tank/fuel lines. Yes, algae will grow on gas.

Jukelemon brings up a good point, total loss of power or missing. I would have to say its missing, when its ideling you can visibly see the motor shake when it misses, same thing throughout the RPM's but, shaking gets more VIOLENT!! The missing is in close rythm with itself, except at idle, it will miss everyever 1-2 seconds as opposed to throttling up and then the misses are much closer in time. At full throttle the engine won't even open up and plane out, just misses and shakes like a cat in sack.

Pull one plug wire at a time and see if you can remove one with no effect. If so, then it's either that injector and/or something electrical affecting that cylinder. It sounds similar to my symptoms when I plugged an injector.

I have done that, the response is the same with every plug, drop in RPM's still misses, does that mean its pointing towards a plugged injector?

No. If the response is exactly the same with every plug then I would say that you have a more general problem and not an individual plugged injector. It could still be a fuel problem (e.g. fuel filter) but probably not 1 injector.

I would start with the basics as mentioned.

Change filter, look at timing, plug condition etc. It sounds like a basic failure in the mechanics.

Also, check the main electrical ground.

Sounds good, I am going to drive it home tomorrow after work and tear back into it myself and try many of the suggestions and hope for the best!! I drive about 2500 miles a month and I need that thing reliable again!! Its now going to be my primary transportation(again)!
I will keep you all posted on it!
