What years are wired for a tac? I have a 84 22r and want to put a sr5 cluster in it. Can anyone offer any info? And yes searched the forum up and down.

IDK ... however, my '85 DX was not wired for it so I had to run a wire to the SR5 cluster to make the tac work.

Also.. if you don't know already, the oil pressure sender needs to be changed to the gauge type sending unit, other wise the "idiot" light sending unit (yes they are different) will the KILL the oil pressure gauge... ask me how I know

Oh.. and there is info out there (PBB) that shows you how to change the odo to your actual mileage but you didn't hear that from me.. :D

The truck gurus probably know more but I do know that it is not year specific. The SR5 models all came with a tach but its still considered an option.

Interesting. My Nov 1984 DX (1985 model) was plug and play.

Trying to get more info out of this thread but I recently plugged a 22re sr5 cluster into my 22r truck and the tach didnt work. So do I need a 22r cluster or do i have to wire the tach in?

I don't know but my guess is the R and RE models may take different signals for the tach. I know that for several years the R and the RE came out side by side so I am sure it can be done. Sorry not more help

there nis a good thread on this on the net somwhere maybe yota tech. involves running a wire to the NEG side of the coil. I did it years ago but dont remember how.

I know it doesn't really help but my 20R 1980 pickup had a tach and factory wiring for it. It just had a 1 wire input off of the coil.

I don't think my truck is an SR5 because the SR5s had a 5 speed for that year. My truck came with a 4 speed.

Yes, carb'd and EFI coils & igniters are very different.

Any 22r can be wired for a tac in a 22re cluster. Just put a wire from the (+) side of the coil to the cluster. The hard part is finding which pin-out slot is for the tac and merging it into the harness to make it plug and play.

With that being said, I bet Toyota already has it wired for a tac and the pin is already in the harness. It may already be plug and play..., but you will need to find that out.

I would be surprised if it WASN'T already wired.

I'll try to look at my diagrams tonight to get the wire color. But it's in the FSM wiring diagrams, if anybody has them handy. It really is only one wire, IIRC.

Alright thanks guys. Like i mentioned before, I hooked a cluster up and the tac didnt work so i guess im not wired but im not sure. If anyone has any other info or pics please post em! Thanks!

Gotta get more info outta this thread! Come on I know you guys are chalk full of knowledge out there! Lets have it! How do you wire in a tac??? :D:D:D

I think what he meant was that it may already be in the harness from the cluster to the engine bay, the trick is going to be finding which wire you need to pull out of the harness to connect to the coil.

Ah Ha... ok food for thought I suppose. Well first thing I need to do is find an 84 to 86 carbed Sr5 cluster. Anyone got one???
