22r losing power at 40mph, doesn't matter if I'm in 2nd gear or 3rd gear. I'm new to working with carb engines. I have an 87 stock 22r with a 38 weber, header, and 32s, stock gears. I've replaced the fuel filter and checked the vacuum advance diaphragm. Truck idles fine around 850rpms. Once I hit 40 mph truck just dies and will begin to backfire when I slow down. Where should I start next?

Backfire is usually a timing issue.

Does the truck have a stonger than normal exhaust odor and backfire out the carb, running too lean, explosive mix in the intake. If backfiring out the exhaust during deacceleration, too much gas getting into the exhaust unburned and exploding there, its running rich somehow. What do the plugs look like? Check compression to be sure your valves are working. I hate carbs.

Before I adjusted anything i found the plugs were full of gas. Made some adjustments on the carb and put new plugs in. Idles clean now. I'm sure the timing chain and distributer timing is good now. My regulator is set at 4psi. I will have to check the compression next then.

I checked my compression by the way, 1st cylinder was 118 and the rest were all low 120s all within 10%. Is there a website where I can get the installation manual for a 38 weber? I'm installing a new mechanical fuel pump tomorrow and still waiting on the gasket kit.
Redline 746-38M. Can't find it anywhere.

I havent tried running without it but it did come with the kit. I believe the mechanical fuel pump has about 5psi of pressure and the regulator drops it to 3 for the carb. I have mine set at 3.5 right now. But thanks I will look into that manual!

Forgot to mention a clogged cat can result in unexplained power loss.

rules that out for sure! Good luck with the new carb, people say those weber carbs work great.

So I installed the new mechanical fuel pump, took my carb off and found all the mounting brackets between the manifold and carb were not sealed correctly. I sealed all the gaskets with lithium grease and lock tite on the the bolts.
I took the top off my carb to inspect the float and it's 2mm from the needle like it's supposed to be. Fuel filter in the carb was clean. Float chamber was clean. Reassembled the carb. I have my mixing screws set at about 3 turns out from the seat. Idles alot better now around 800rpm. Took it for a ride and still dies at 40mph. Like its not getting gas.

What's next?

I rebuild a carb once. I had the same issue and found out it was the gasket that was restricting fuel flow. Couldn't tell ya where it was but I will tell ya I swapped the old gasket back in and had power back

I wanna say it separated the top half of the floats and such from the bottom
