Are the OEM 22RE turbos good/bad/interesting/valuable? I have a chance to score one and thought I'd ask if there was any interest...

Most people end up changing them out for an MR-2 turbo or T3/T4 etc. I know they have cracking issued at the wastegate.

I've got an MR-2 turbo mated to a 22RTE turbo manifold along with piping etceteria that's been sitting in my garage for a while if anyone is interested...

I don't know if Toyota lost more money repairing Turbo trucks in the late 1980's, or repairing TRD supercharger trucks in the 1990-2000's??? My guess is the Turbo units themselves were bad in the 1980's, and the pistons, wrist pins, and connectiong rods were not strong enough for add-on boost on the newer models????
Mark Algazy is a carburetor man in a fuel injection world, and Jim Sickles will spend the rest of his time on earth preaching the ills of "forced induction"

Back in the early 90's I had an 87 turbo and a friend of mine had an 86. They were pretty neat and had noticeably more power than a regular 22RE truck. But I certainly wouldn't call them fast. I think my 2.7 tacoma would smoke them in a drag race. My friend put a fuel pressure regulator inline with the wastegate on his and somehow managed to get it up to like 19 pounds of boost. It went like hell for about a week, the the thing started smoking horribly. Back in those days we weren't much for diagnosing stuff and he wound up pulling the motor and doing a V8 swap, which came with a whole host of other issues eventually leading to selling the truck for a huge loss out of frustration. But I never had any trouble with mine. Bought it with 80k on it and had it until about 120k.

I had one from a parts truck once, 100% complete, so I considered swapping it into my truck. But then when I did a bunch of research, read about the expense of rebuilding, poor reilability, etc etc etc, I gave up on the idea. Ended up selling the whole thing for $400 to a guy that supposedly was gonna put it in an old Supra.

My advice: unless you're looking to do a quick flip and make some $$$ on the deal, I wouldn't bother with it.

If it's in a pickup and it has the 5 speed, then the trans is worth some money... The engine is a novelty and a hobby in my mind...

It is....

Like what kind of money? And to whom?
I'm not going to pull it until I know what I can get from it.... advance sale would be best... OFFERS?

Mark:

I have seen crusty beat up old R151F turbo trannys go for $700. They are rare and highly sought after. You should easily get $500 for it, if no nibbles here then try Pirate.

Sub to the 22RTE list on Yahoo, and list the engine for sale. Someone will take it, that's how I got rid of mine. I sold the entire engine, wiring harness, all accessories, as a package. I kept the radiator though, still have it.

I also got $150 for the entire rear axle, it should be a V6-style 4-pinion diff, they are worth more.

The rest of the truck has little value, IMO, unless maybe if it has a fancy SR5 interior in mint condition.

Did they ever make these with 5 speeds in either extended cabs or 4 runner's? Both mine and my friends were reg cab 5 spd's but every turbo extracab and 4 runner I have ever seen were auto's. My friend actually bought an SR5 extracab parts truck and we made his into an extracab. When he swapped the V8 in with the C4 we took all the leftover parts and put them out behind a friend's shop. 2 weeks later everything was gone. Basically a whole rolling chassis with the r151f/transfercase/junk 22re and a standard cab stolen. He gave me the motor and harness, I was going to do something with it. Wound up giving it to a guy about 5 years later who had helped me out with the MR2 I had and was going to put in an early 80's celica.

I am not at the vehicle so I can't answer many questions... plus, I'm a cruiser guy, not a mini guy.

I will have hands on the vehicle again next Saturday I think. PLEASE post pictures, identifying information or whatever you have so I can let you all know what is there.

Thanks,
Mark

The most important thing you will need to do is verify that it still has the R151F tranny in it. Fortunately it's easy to do, all you need to do is look underneath at the bottom of the bellhousing, there should be a big rubber plug in it, filling a hole about 1-1/2" in diameter. I have no idea why Toyota put that rubber plug there, but it's the only mini-truck tranny with one AFAIK.

I have seen xcab turbo trucks, I saw one on eBay a few months ago. I also know for sure that they did make a few turbo 4Runners with 5-speeds, my friend owned one for a bit.

Seems like we do this about once a year...

Truer words were never spoken. When i started my turbo transformation, i thought it was going to be simple and pretty straight forward. Boy was i wrong. The little things really get you.
If you're looking for a never ending project that robs your bank account on a regular basis, stirs up alcoholic tendencies, and will flat out piss you off, this is a project for you. But when it all comes together, dang; it's a blast.

BTW that is a sexy truck.

Super nice truck...

To answer your Q, the easiest and best thing to do out of the gate is get a 7MGTE Turbo and put it on... CT-26? 27? Can't recall right now...

The CT-25's? The stock one's, whatever they are, are pretty much junk and waiting to explode. NEVER spend money on one. There are way better economical options.

The 2nd thing is to go here... 22RTE - EFI and Tuning
