Have a 1985 22RE that has about 9K on it with a mid range LC cam and header kit. I bought the truck built, and have never owned a 22 RE before. I have one question. While the engine has good low end for a 4 cylinder it does not like to rev at all. Makes allot of noise above 3000 rpm, and quits pulling at around 4500. She is all done at 5000. The stock redline was 5600. Is this normal for 22 RE's? It runs fine other than that. Just loud.......has stock exhaust, and good muffler, just loud and does not like to rev. Thanks.

Do you know the axle gearing? With 35s and the 22RE, most run the 5.29s but you could get away with 4.88s.

Also, the stock size exhaust is restrictive, even with the header, it limits the engine's breathing. What would help is a 2 inch exhaust all the way back from the header and change the catalytic converter too. The older ones did well, but the new ones really flow better.

My '85 is the same. Your build will either get you low end or top end, not both. 4.88s will make a big difference if your tires are bigger than stock.

I do run 4.88's and the truck is geared just as it would be stock on the hwy.........the speedo is right on. As for durability I wonder how much trashing a 22RE can take while still being able to rack up allot of miles. Any really high mileage 22RE out there that have had a tough life?

I have heard of a guy who has over 1 million, (yes million) miles on the original engine!!! (22RE), and some others who have over 700,000 miles on original!

Here is a story quoted from page five of Toyotatrucknation.com under high mileage stories from owners...

"My Lil Red Truck

400,000 Miles

I am a proud owner of a 1990 Toyota pickup truck. My truck recently turned 400,000 miles, all with the original motor, and transmssion. I have kept up my truck by doing regular maintenance work. I must say i LOVE my truck, my wife and daughter drive toyota trucks too. we are a toyota family.
It's kinda hard to beat a Toyota - they're made to last.

just another example...I own a 86 4runner rocktoy w/ 22RE, I owned a 2000 4Runner Sport w/ 3.4 V6 supercharged, and I also own a 2005 V8 4Runner, and I wouldn't choose any other manufacturer to drive!!

Does it have an adustable cam gear? If so, it could be "tuned" for low end. I seem to recall advancing the camshaft favors low end while retarding the camshaft favors high rpm.

Howdy! My 85 22RE is just ready to roll 200,000. All original, stock. Bought it over 10 years ago with about 100,000 on it. Leaked oil bad from front crank seal. Tailgate was covered in it. Been that way a long time. Seller got it from her X. Truck looked trashed all over. Got it real cheap. Lots of work & a little $$, and it runs good, looks pretty fair. Now running 5.29 with a Detroit in the rear, on 35's. Keeps up OK on the freeway. John

The power band of the 22re ends just above 4k. Holding the shift will do nothing but waste gas. The 2xR series motors were intended for spirited torque under the 4k range, not anything high end. If your's stops pulling at 4500 then it's doing damn good.
