89 Pickup starts up fine but when it starts to get warm and revs up and down really quick and once its really warm it stops. Replaced throttle position sensor didnt help. Sprayed ether around to look for air leaks but cant find anything. Check engine light comes on if rpm's get to high. Im at a loss?

My first thought is one of the EFI temperature sensors. Did you pull the CEL codes?

I'm having idle problems, but only when it's cold, so I suspect it's the infamous Idle Air Valve (or whatever it's called) on the bottom of the throttle body. Ordered the parts yesterday from Sam to tear it apart. All my sensors were tested when I had the engine apart, and I'm relatively sure I don't have any vacuum leaks, but I will give it the starter fluid spray test to make sure.

The IACV is still available? I had every parts guy looking it up for me with no luck. I had to buy a uesed one for backup. Post the part number when you get it...

88 22RE with manual trans (straight throttle body, 08/88 and up): 22230-35030 $214.97 MUD price. Warehouse has 2 in stock.

The old reed valve type (the one that was NOT on the bottom of the throttle body) is disco'd.

:D

Yea, mine is the slant throttle body with the IACV separate from the throttle body. I believe the discontinued part number is 22230-35010.

Sorry about the hijack...

OP...I would check the cold start time switch and the temperature sensor (for the computer, not the gauge), both are located just below the throttle body. They do some wired things to the idle when they go out. The FAQ in this section has the specs for them. I have them at home, but not at home right now.

I'm still not convinced he has the air idle valve below the throttle body. I agree with snobdds. It's probably one of the EFI temp sensors, but not likely the cold start time switch.

I have the later "straight" intake and TB, I swapped it over when I put the engine back together. IACV is on the bottom of the TB, parts came from an '89 4Runner.

I know the sensors you mean, they are the green and brown ones in this photo. I tested them both when I had them out of the intake while it was out for powdercoating, and they were fine. But I do have a spare set of each, maybe I'll give them a try.

I didn't order a new IACV, too pricey. Just the gaskets, plus that little dashpot thingy on mine is not working right (too slow), so I got a new one of those. I'm hoping I can do some cleaning on the IACV, maybe test the thermostat part, see if I can get it working properly. My problem is the thing idles really high when it's cold, like 2000-2100 rpm. Hard to drive. Once it warms up it's OK, settles down to 750-800 but it's not stable, sometimes sits at 1000.

When I did my TB/plenum swap I abandoned the air valve. That is part of my confusion. It was my understanding that the later model TB/plenum setup didn't use the air valve. I've never seen an air valve on a later model 22RE at the boneyard.

The two sensors below the thermostat are the EFI Thermo Sensor, and the Cold Start Time Switch. If you are having cold start issues the problem is probably the CSTS, or the cold start injector. If the issue is while the engine is warm, it's probably the EFI Thermo Sensor. If you have an Air Valve, upgrade to the later model TB/plenum and toss that junk in the trash.

Don't you have a couple of small coolant lines going to the underside of the TB? Those are going to the IACV. As I understand it, the IACV opens a passage that allows air to bypass the throttle plate when the engine is cold. Then, when the coolant warms up, the thermostat in the IACV closes off the passage and the idle comes down.

Did you just bypass this?

Check out this really informative Toyota document, page 8: http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h21.pdf

Yes I have it. No, I didn't bypass it. What I'm talking about the the monster unit found in the older trucks. It was a separate unit that dangled below and behind the TB. I personally consider what you are showing to be a part of the TB. It's a much simpler and more efficient device that replaced the old Air Flow Valve.

OK, then yes you and I have the same thing. That old stuff is gone on mine too, although I still have it in a box.
