I'm hoping to sneak out of work on Friday afternoon and get it wrapped up. I think I set the initial timing incorrectly by not fully isolating the vacuum advance.

I'm out. I drove it over to Ron's and we figured out some things...but it caught fire on the way home. It didn't burn down, but it needs some things sorted out.

Also, this is your reminder to have a fire extinguisher handy in the cab.

Caught fire?! Like fuel pump grenaded and sprayed fuel on the exhaust manifold caught fire? Or drop a stogie in your lap caught fire?

The air filter was plugged from running super rich. The carb needs to be rejetted. We removed the filter so i could drive to the parts store. It backfired out the carb and, because it was running so rich, caught the carb on fire. Flames came out the hood louvers, bubbled the paint, and left everything black.

I'm going to park it until I can put fuel injection in.
