Random thought... what about a 255/80r17? It’s a true 33” and weighs 8-10 lbs less than a 285/70r17. I love the tall skinny look on the older land cruisers but not sure how it would look on the GX.
There's nothing wrong with going with a "Pizza Cutter" tire, I ran the skinnies on our 80-Series and I loved them. I am not sure how they will look on the GX but I ran 32x10x18 on the stock wheels and it wasn't bad. The only drawback to going with that tire size is that it's not a normal/popular size and there are very few offerings. This will make it much more difficult to find a replacement should you ever need one when on the road. The height will impact your gearing more so than the width so I don't see any advantage in going with the skinny in terms of a regear.

We could talk tires to death but there is already enough threads on that haha.
Sounds like you're leaning towards the 33 camp. All I would say is that all 33s can vary in weight.
A/T? M/T?
LT or P? If you plan to air down go LT, if not, go P.
They don't make the tire I want in the size I want (285/75/17) except for an LT, so the decision was made for me. In a 285/70/17 (or many other size options) there exists a broad spectrum of tires that perform different and weigh different. The LT285/70R17 10ply Falken At3w weighs 58.8lbs, the P285/70R17 Falken 50.3lbs. Go to a toyo at3 in a p285/70/17 and it weighs 46 lbs. Go to a toyo at3 in a LT285/70/17 (10 ply, black sidewall) and it weighs 55 lbs. Go to a BFG KM3 and it weighs 67.22 lbs.
Point being there is decent variation within the same size. The above is a range of 46 lbs to 67.22 lbs. Take out the MT if we are all AT here, and there still exists quite a spread from 46 lbs to 58.8 lbs.
Back to original question - I don't know anyone running a tall skinny on a GX460. A lot of taco guys do. Not sure how it will look.
EDIT: And before we get into a whole physics debate over regearing, I was only offering up tire weights to OP as the question was centered around saving tire weight. "weighs 8-10 lbs less than a 285/70r17" so just presenting info. Good stuff and that rack looks great!
I agree, way too many variables and so much to consider. The OP doesn't want the expense of a regear so he should stay with a 33" tire or smaller. You can survive on stock gearing with 33's, that's a fact, any taller and it would be wise to regear.

Yes planning to stay with a 33 all terrain LT rated for side wall protection. All terrain is needed for the PNW due to rain and snow. Weight is a huge factor. They do make a C rated in a 285/70r17 KO2.

These things are awesome and he will route a custom logo into it for you. Let me know if you want pics of mine. It's pretty cool and in a landcruiser-esque font.

Absolutely, some time early next year. I have a rear bumper coming hopefully sometime in January. Once the dust settles on that I’ll get the diffs out and over to Nitro Gear.

The Dobinsons rear bumper is a great value for the money but I hate how the spare sits outboard the side of the vehicle covering part of the tail light. It looks too off-centered IMHO but I have not seen one in person to know whether or not I could accept it.

Yup saw that build. Stellar has been pumping out GX builds. Owner commented and said those are 35s. I kind of agree about the offset but definitely like the lines/integration of the dobinsons bumper. I mean hell, people are shelling out over 1k for the rigid, this isn't much more, has way better departure angle and actual armor. Also don't like how low the rigid tire sits at least on the Canadian GXOR build. Maybe it's adjustable?
Will someone please educate me on gearing? I am seriously asking for help so please excuse my ignorance here. I understand the concept is to make the truck drive like stock, but I get confused as to when we say 285/70/17s are ok (get by) with stock gearing and 285/75/17s not ok.
I used this calculator to put some numbers to it - pretty cool and allows you to put in vehicle specific numbers. Gear Ratio Calculator
Here are the results, smaller tire is always on left, bigger on right.
Image order:
1. 265/60/18 stock tire vs 285/70/17
2. 265/60/18 stock tire vs 285/75/17
3. 285/70/17 vs 285/75/17
What do you all make of this? Since we were mostly talking about highway speeds, at 70 the numbers look darn close but I'll be the first to admit I don't know squat here. I do know what being severly undergeared feels like - like I said before I ran 35s on my 97 80 series landcruiser and that was definitely in need of new gears.

They are on a roll with the 5th Gens and GX's lately and I like what I am seeing but of course they are on the west coast lol. The Dobinsons is very similar to that of the Kaymar and ARB LC bumpers, a very Ausie/South African outback style look. I don't mind it and it would match well with my Ironman front bumper but it's a lot of weight out back with it being all steel so that's something to consider as well.
I also noticed that with the 2014+ rear end the reverse light/red marker light has to be fully removed in order to notch the plastic corner facia for the bumper to recess properly. This isn't necessary on the 2010-13 rear as the notch is well below the vertical lens on that rear end. It's not a big deal in terms of functionality as the bumper itself provides the new reverse lights and red marker lights, but the oddly shaped hole in the corner looks extremely unfinished. One could fabricate a proper aluminum or steel cover that would fill in that space and mount it via the provided screw holes already in place for the lens, but that adds to the complexity of the install.
I need a rear bumper, that's a simple fact and I am not sure how much longer I am willing to hold out for the "right one" to come along. This bumper is a nice option but it also lacks a built in receiver hitch so one must keep their Class III or IV factory hitch that will reduce clearance/breakover and doesn't look as fluid as one that were built in.
The Rig'd Ultraswing is $1300 and the Wilco is $800, neither of which have ever appealed to me personally but they do have their fans and I get it. I don't like how low they sit nor how far out they protrude from the body but being able to remove it is a nice feature for those that can benefit from it.
That is a very nice minimalist approach but it'll only work for the 2010-13 GX460 due to how the reverse light/reflectors differ in shape on the 2014+ rear end. It's all about compromise and no single option will work for everyone so it's nice to have multiples with more options coming to market every day.

Unrelated dumb GX noob question. Would the 2014+ rear bumper be able to be a direct swap on a 2010-2013? I'm wanting to trim the bottom of my bumper and it looks like the 2014+ is less of a headache to deal with and it looks cleaner. If the bumper is a direct swap and you get a new rear bumper I'd like to procure your factory rear bumper.

That's a good question and to be totally honest I don't know. But I would assume that the only differences are the shape and location of the reverse light/red marker light. My only concern would be if they use different plugs for those lights because the 2010-13 does have a different plug for the tail lights in comparison to the 2014+. If it is in fact a direct swap I don't see why I wouldn't be willing to swap for yours so long as the condition of our paint/plastic is similar. I'll look into this further and we can discuss off-line.
*Edit- As you can see in this pic it's installed on a 2014+ and it appears to have been cut without interfering with the rear lights, so maybe Stellar Built and/or the customer simply opted to notch the plastics and remove the lens? I'd consider only installing the spare tire carrier side if I went this route and that would further eliminate the need to run the camera and plate relocation as well. But this could all very well be a moot point if there isn't an option for a built in receiver. I've reached out to Kyle at Treaty Oak to see if he can clarify further as I see the four mounting holes in some pics of the bumper and on others I don't.

Ok sounds good to me. I didn't have it clean long enough to observe the paint condition, it's been in a perpetual state of dirty. Lets reconvene at a later time on this subject!
