2016+ Steering Wheel Leather Issues

Mine is great, but its only 3 months old. Looks like I'd better be careful with it. I do wish they made an all leather steering wheel (no wood) with better heat elements in it. My wife's Volvo has a very nice 3 level heat wheel that works awesome. Nothing else I've owned is as nice.

When I was looking for my 2018, I also found lots of examples of peeling steering wheels for sale. I almost bought a 2016 and the dealer was going to replace it, but they backed out after the salesperson spoke to the manager. Wanted me to pay the difference. I walked away immediately and later found my 2018. It has 49k miles and the steering wheel seems to be holding up well.

However, since I saw several examples when shopping, I am super cautious when driving and when I use sanitizers always dry it up before touching the wheel. I do feel the leather is kinda "too soft" and not rugged at all. Like somebody said in the other thread it seems to be a common issue with MYs16 and 17. I also heard somewhere that Toyota changed the leather or the supplier mid 2018, when they had to replace lots of under warranty steering wheels in 16s and 17s.

This is the only thing I miss from my 4runner trd pro. The steering wheel was not the prettiest, but it was rugged as hell and I felt nothing would ruin it. With the 200, I have the "go anywhere" feeling (with much more comfortable and power than the 4runner) but have to walk in eggshells with the steering wheel.

Curious .. what was the replacement cost?

Can't remember the exact number, but it was upwards $1500. It was one of those things when you are negotiating with dealers. Numbers flying all over and we finally reach an agreement, the guy comes back and say, sorry you need to pay more. SMH. I walked away immediately.

That C3 on the end is the color code. They have different colors and different options such as heated/ non-heated.

C3 is black leather with wood trim with heater. $695.47 new.
That is just the wheel so you need to remove the airbag and the button controllers etc and put them on the new wheel.

My wood is scuffed fairly badly on 2016 LX570. Do you have carry those? Open pore brown walnut color.
I have searched and cannot find on this forum if there is a repair servicing for the wood. My leather is in great shape. Wood is damaged.

I have used these guys for leather work. They also do wood.

I’m about to send my steering wheel to them too to rewrap. I can’t wait for that new leather feel.

How is something so simple overlooked? The wheel on my 04 Cruiser and 07 4Runner all look brand new.

My 2017 has similar issues. I think it really started appearing with the alcohol gel use, so I try to be very careful with that too. When I sold my 95’ 80, the steering wheel leather was also in better shape. This stuff on my 200 is extremely sensitive. I’ve nicked accidentally with just a finger nail…

I kept running into dead ends with Toyota. I'll pick up the battle another day but for now decided to go with a Loncky wrap off Amazon and stoked with the quality and feel.

Looks great! Have a link?

Uh, bummer. Definitely seems to be a bad batch/supplier type issue for it to fail in such relatively short years. And for a flagship product no less.

Looks to me like a bonded faux type leather with a synthetic backing to fail in that manner. Still shouldn't fail this prematurely, though the left side probably gets exposed to more UV and use causing that side to show more wear.

Real leather generally doesn't fail in the way of separating off a backing, which is probably why the LXs aren't showing similar failures.
