When I was looking for my 2018, I also found lots of examples of peeling steering wheels for sale. I almost bought a 2016 and the dealer was going to replace it, but they backed out after the salesperson spoke to the manager. Wanted me to pay the difference. I walked away immediately and later found my 2018. It has 49k miles and the steering wheel seems to be holding up well.
However, since I saw several examples when shopping, I am super cautious when driving and when I use sanitizers always dry it up before touching the wheel. I do feel the leather is kinda "too soft" and not rugged at all. Like somebody said in the other thread it seems to be a common issue with MYs16 and 17. I also heard somewhere that Toyota changed the leather or the supplier mid 2018, when they had to replace lots of under warranty steering wheels in 16s and 17s.
This is the only thing I miss from my 4runner trd pro. The steering wheel was not the prettiest, but it was rugged as hell and I felt nothing would ruin it. With the 200, I have the "go anywhere" feeling (with much more comfortable and power than the 4runner) but have to walk in eggshells with the steering wheel.
