Not to steal thunder from mod5 above....(*please address his question*).

I received a couple PMs. The answer is, it does take the Urethane all the way around.

It was recommended to me also that there be more than one installer, and to do it at the shop as well. Mostly because they will have all the tools there, just in case you get a forgetful tech that left his good (what-have-you) at home. Also, for the techs to use a slower setup time Urethane. Most shops use something that sets in 8-12 minutes, and that may not be enough time if you dont know what youre doing.

Really other than a large piece of glass, needing 4 hands, the install doesnt seem bad. Making sure the Urethane gets all around which seems to be the sticking point with most shops.

I pulled my window out myself earlier this week, to get a jump start on the rust. "Fortunately" it wasnt glued down and came out easy.

The glass is getting a LLumar Air 80 tint today, and getting installed on Friday.

@mod5csi: How much was the Toyo glass?

@mod5csi: How much was the Toyo glass?
Cost is 25 years with USAA, with full coverage on a 20 year old truck. They still made money off me.

To answer your question I don't know, I haven't seen the estimate yet. And, really the price will be artificial with insurance pricing and the :princess: works at the glass shop, and I've had the OEM gasket for a while now.

I will post more info when, hopefully the glass gets installed on Friday.

June 2016
Thought I would add some updated info to this thread. Went outside on Wednesday and there was a large 18 inch wavy crack in drivers side windshield on the LX. No impact, it was in my driveway and crack originates from roof edge. UGH. After some googling of the windshield markings, it appears I have a Safelite windshield, bronze tint, marked SGC (Safelite Glass Company?, definitely not original, which was news to me).

Will report back after the install.

Reporting back. Well, the results of the install with Satellite was mixed. One guy came out and install was in my driveway. Yes, I know, but as said in my original post, this was last resort after first two local shops refused to do an 80 install. I removed the interior trim, panel below windshield on outside, and the wipers ahead of time so we could concentrate on the windshield.

The +s:
  • They guy that came out was familiar with the install in an 80 and had done it before. I was there the entire install, which took a couple hours.
  • No rust at all in my windows channel, which was amazing since the windshield coming out (also a Safelite) was not glued in any way. No sign of any adhesive. Guess I am lucky it didn't leak. No adhesive meant no scraping, etc. so install went quicker.
  • He was glad I had an OEM gasket to use.
  • Total cost about $250.
  • Guy was fascinated with the cruiser and I got to hear lots of stories about his buddy's FJ40.
The negatives:
  • In spite of two calls to confirm the bronze windshield was being shipped down from another warehouse, etc. , it did not make it onto the installers truck. A green tint one did. This led to some discussion at the onset and I was given option to have him come out again on another day with right one. Since it turned out that my cracked windshield was actually green tint (apparent when removed, but I would have sworn it was bronze when it was still installed), I just went with it. New glass is branded AP Tech. I check it over before install and didn't find any of the waviness mentioned in other threads. Seems fine.
  • Although we ended up applying a large amount of adhesive both between the glass and gasket, and the gasket and window channel, it was mostly done with the gasket in place (see below). He was very concerned about filling the gasket channel with adhesive and then having to set it in place and pull the rope to install. Apparently he had some issues with glue getting on the interior fabric, etc. in the past and so he was a little hesitant. I kept pushing and we sort of split the difference, in the end with a lot of adhesive being applied via the caulk gun nozzle jammed into the gasket/window junction. Went around it a couple times. The same thing for channel to gasket. This might have been a bigger pain in the end since the caulk gun nozzle (replaceable plastic ones), kept coming off the gun and breaking. I am pretty confident it is sealed well even with the suboptimal install method. Hopefully it wont leak. We did use an awful lot of adhesive and checked all around weatherstrip after the fact. Sometimes you pick your battles I guess.

One funny thing is that I think we was convinced I was some sort of company spy, who was evaluating him. I had the interior trim tools on floor of cruiser, and it is apparently quite unusual for a "non professional" to have these. I also knew way too much about the install and windshields (thanks MUD). He said Safelite does these fake installs occasionally, films them and uses them as "don't do this" instructional videos for new employees. Hum.

So, its done. Drove it 1500 miles in last two weeks on a trip, all seems fine. Hopefully I can move onto the next project now.

I finally got my glass installed today.

I have not seen an invoice. I only paid my deductible minus the cost of the gasket they would have supplied. I already had a Toyota gasket for them to use.

My wife said the total amount they are billing the insurance is $800 something. The glass itself was list at $700, but would not give me their cost. Probably $5-600.

The install went smooth. The tech had no problem applying the adhesive all around. Other than whining about the clean up. I told him that's why Toyota recommended tape around the seal, inside and out.

Anyway. Anyone in the Denver area (Springs-Ft Collins-Boulder), call Insight Auto Glass in Centennial, ask for Pam (my :princess:). Tell her you've got a Land Cruiser and you're on the IH8MUD forum. She is working on adding us as an account for pricing. She will send the tech familiar with Land Cruisers. Unless you spring for OEM, you will get the FYG glass and they will get the OEM gasket, if you ask for it. That glass had the black border and bronze upper tint strip.

Couple shots. Toyota glass, Lexus Bronze tint, no black border, no upper tint strip, with a Llumar Air 80 clear tint. You can see the adhesive oozing out the upper gasket/frame. Before clean up, obviously.

I have read though this thread and others pertaining to windshield replacement and will share my experience. I ordered an OEM gasket and had on hand when the Safelite tech arrived today. I presented him with a copy of the FSM and explained I would like for this procedure to be followed. He looked at the FSM and then inspected truck. He then explained that the sealant nozzles he was provided and required to use with a Milwaukee gun would not work. When he showed me the nozzles I agree they were large in diameter and appeared to be the wrong tool for the job. We agreed that proceeding with what he had to work with would have created a mess. I asked about using sealant in another container/nozzle similar to the one pictured in the FSM. Said he would check with his boss and see if there was anything else they could use. I handed him the printed copy of the FSM installation instructions to share with his boss in the discussion. Nice guy and didn't push to do anything I was not comfortable with. I'm waiting to hear back from him and may go ahead and check around with some other companies. Several on Mud have used Safelite but I have not read about anyone else experiencing this scenario.

Tape around the edges of the gasket and glass and body. Helps with cleanup.

My guy, pics above, didn't tape. Took him an hour to clean up. Milwaukee 12v caulking gun like you describe.

Yeah when I did mine it was still the worst truck job I have done. I would take a front axle rebuild and a PHH over resealing the windshield. That sticky black s*** got on everything even when I taped it up. I would find it on my hands, arms, forearms on my clothes, work bench, the walls of the garage, you would have thought I sprayed it on with a garden hose. I will leave that one for the professionals.

At a place that has 5 stars out of 300 reviews on Yelp in Santa Ana CA, and they almost still didn't seal the weatherstrip to the body, only to the glass. I even gave them a FSM printout.

Talked to the guys and they brought it back inside to seal it. Good thing I checked.

Taking it to Alfredo’s in Corona soon to get my Fuyao replaced with TOYOTA glass and gasket. It’s leaking. Hoping for no signs of rust!

I’ll be applying Clearplex to protect it from chips and dings.
