IIRC I read you also used 1" spacers, is that correct? I don't want to do spacers at all, read too many things about them, so do you think the 305/55-20 would still work with stock? (33.2"/12"-20")
It's the 12" width I'm worried about.....but dang I want that width!
Really appreciate your input.
I think I've narrowed my choices down to Cooper AT3 XLT, Toyo Open Country 2 (if I can still find them), and Nitto Terra Grapplers G2.

EDIT...just saw the 1" spacers in your sig line. I'm guessing that puts 12" width out of bounds...thoughts?

It'll be too wide and won't clear the upper control arm. I believe you can do a 285 in a taller tire and get away without spacers.

An option is to get aftermarket wheel that have the right offset to avoid spacers. Yet many aftermarket wheels aren't made to the same high load specification that stock is. I don't love spacers, but their a necessary evil. With the right installation and attention paid, they are a non-issue IMO. My setup handles almost 15k lbs worth of rig with spacers.

Interesting tire choices. Any particular reason you're seeking the older Toyo AT2s? or even NTG2? They're almost decade old designs that are greatly outclassed by modern designs.

My hundy is my main off-roader, so tires can be a little on tame side for LX...Have had both tires and still like them, like the tread pattern, but good point, I should select newer tech. Ridge grapplers too aggressive for look I want. I'm a huge Cooper fan, and have 2 sets of the AT3 XLTs, so they're probably in the lead right now. Coopers are so chunk resistent it's remarkable. I also have the Cooper STT Pro mud...21k and still very few chunks. I live on a dirt road so essentially I off-road a little every day.
I wonder how the 295/60-20 (33.9/11.6/7) would do with the 11.6 width....still hit the UCA? It's only a little less than 1/2" further away from it.

Yep it will hit the UCA.

Which factor is driving that, the width or heigth of tire?
Width. 285/60-20 rubs so we know a wider tire will too.

The sidewall of the tire has a curved profile. The width dimension may be section width (or tread width), at the widest part of the tire bulge. Where that is located vertically about the UCA is what's harder to estimate, but is the issue as you can see from @bencallaway pic.

The calculators all say "section width", but show FULL width including sidewall in the diagram.....so that's not exactly correct. None of the 3 I'm using have contact patch listed. Mfg site says section width is 11.3" (vs. 11.2" on calculator).

If I was set on this size, could I get it to work without spacers, what would need to be done? ALso, I'm sticking with the stock rims.
Many thanks for all your insight and help.

You don't have a lot of options at that point. If that size tire, then you need less backspacing to create clearance against the UCA. But you also want stock wheels.

Potentially another strategy depending on just how much clearance you need... there's aftermarket UCAs that might be slighter in profile at the contact point that may be a solution. That may be opening its own can of worms as many aftermarket UCAs are either fussy, noisy, or likely less durable than stock. They also generally don't have the AHC height sensor bracket which would need to be welded on.

Personally, I think the less of those evils is a 1" spacer. Alternatively, a high quality aftermarket wheel in the +30 to +40 mm range. They do increase the track width and correct for scrub radius geometry which would be good to pair with taller tires.

Yes, you've summed up my options well....darn it...lol
What about towing 5-6k# with wheel spacers, heard of any issues?

Thanks for all the valuable info and input! Pulled the trigger on....305/55-20 Cooper AT# XLTs, 1" Bora spacers, on the OEM 20s, to offroad shop to do the splash guard and mudguard trimming. Can't wait!

LX's can support mild to wild just like the LC. Your proposed 285/60/18 (overall diameter 31.4") is an easy fit and won't require any modding effort at all.

You could step up to a 285/65R18 (32.6") tire, and it'll still drop in. Highly recommend size if your goal is largest tire without mods.

Once you go beyond a 33" tire, or an aggressive offset wheel, there are minor mods to do. The 4runner liner mod as you call it for the front. And to the rear of the fenderwell may need removal/modification of the mudflap and sidestep.

Both are documented here:
front liner - Trimming Wheel Well for Larger Tires
rear liner - Modifying Splash Gaurds for 33's

In the event you would like to go more aggressive, people have done 34 and 35s. I walked the middle with a 305/55r20 (33.2"x12.5"). I really enjoy this tire size all around for its height and width. On road traction and off-road clearance. The width helps keep the terrain off the wheel face and sidesteps.

I've purchased your exact set up from all your detailed posts, (but different model tire), to be installed in a few days, and am surprised to see that much space above the tire in wheelwell. In this pic, is AHC in H or N? Do you have sensor lift? Thx!

I just got 325/60r18 Nitto Grapplers installed on SCS SR8's (18 x 9.5 with +25). Nitto reports these tires as 33.35" x 13.03".
I tried heating and tweaking the splash guards up front but ended up having to remove them. Pulling the front fenderwell forward and redrilling holes worked well. With the AHC lift, I have not experienced any rubbing, even in low.

This setup is similar to the 305/55r20 size that several folks are running, but wanted to provide another data point on width/offset that works well (so far).
I believe it looks more aggressive in person, and have had two friends make similar comments.

Woohoo, sweet, It'll work great. That pic was in AHC H. Before I did a mild .75" sensor lift so it's a bit higher again now.

@smeagol That's a ton of beef you got there! Running wide tires is another advantage of the LX as the LC has limitations on account of the pesky KDSS bar. Got sliders coming?

That's the plan. Waiting for the wife and kids to complain about needing a step, so then I can make that purchase their idea :)

^Do you have a picture from the front or back? Would like to see 13" wide tires in all their glory.
