For 60-65 grand that its going to cost you could buy a new 3/4 ton truck a Jeep Rubicon Unlimited and a trailer. The styling is nice i'm sure fit and finish are excellent but to me the last landcrusier sold in this country was a 80 series.

But then you'd own 2 unreliable vehicles with half the usuable life of the ultrareliable LX.

I use to justify that way.

However, Toyota reputation for reliability is falling:

ES300/Camry sludges, transmission issues.
Tundra's broken camshafts on the 5.7 engine (same one as the new 08 LC and LX570).

Let me give you a short story:

2 years ago, I bought a new Mazda minivan (engine and tranny by FORD) for my business. My neighbor and cousins laughed because I didn't buy a Honda
Oddyssey (cousin) or a Toyota Sienna (Neighbor). Both of them bought new and at the same time I did. 2 years later, I have 80,000 miles of trouble free service.
Both of them had transmission failures. The Honda went first. My cousin's Honda was always at the dealer. He's the finance guy for a chain of car dealerships so he always get preferential treatment.
The Toyota Sienna was a big surprise. It went out at 50,000. The dealer couldn't figure it out.

Regardless, both lambasted me for buying a Mazda. I paid $15,000 new after incentive and discounts. It was literally 1/2 the price of both the Honda and Toyota. So it doesn't have a motorized sliding door and leather.

I reasoned that it was a business purchase. I wanted a 100,000 life expectancy. If it died at 60,000 miles, I could justify buying a new one and still come out ahead.

I know this is all anecdotal evidence. However, I wouldn't blindly place my bets of Toyota's famous reliability. They've been slipping in the ranks.

Unique stories and situations always exist. The facts are that reliability scores for Land Cruisers (100 series) vs Jeep and domestic trucks are dramatically different. The lowest? Benz and Land Rover.

True. However, the 100 series seem to have less electronics as these new rigs. They also have a proven engine. The new 5.7 L Tundra engine has a camshaft issue that all of us do not know the outcome of. The Camrys from the 90s seem to be more reliable than the newer ones.

I'd take a LC100 over these new ones anyday of the week.

As far as benz and rovers. Most of their problems are electronic related. None of the reliability issues have been drivetrain related that I can think of. Funny that you bring up rover. My rover(s) has been dead on reliable. I know the public consensus, the ratings and JD surveys but I'll stick to my own experiences. My mom has a disco with 180,000 miles. Knock on wood, I hope my rover is that good.

I'd personally take a FJ cruiser or even a Jeep Rubicon over this new LC. Heck, I kinda like the Prado GX470 Lexus.

For wheeling....sure. This 580 is 4-inches longer and an inch wider than the 100. This will further hinder the new 580, however...time will tell. My modified 100 is longer than the new 580.

And I luv Rovers however MOST of my Rover wheeling buddies have duds, not 180K goodies.

Landcruiser or Highlander

I think these spy photos are the new 2008 Highlander. I attach a photo from the Toyota site.

Some designers at toyota need to be fired. First the ultra gay FJ Cruiser and now this? Lame, I would never even consider this rig when shopping for a new SUV.

I don't think they fire designers for making vehicles which appeals to the masses, and makes them the most profitable auto manufacturer in the world...

80 series Retro

I think they should bring back the 80 series with some more electronics. This new cruiser looks terrible. There is no distinctive lines to define it from a distance....
