I recently purchased a 2007 LC with 170K miles and took it in for a post purchase inspection. I thought I would post one of their findings to see if I can get a collective opinion here.

The mechanic found that the alternator and timing belt are covered in oil and suspects that the leak is coming from the cam shaft. He also noted that it is extremely rare for the cam shaft to leak, so hoping its something else when they remove the cover. Apparently, replacing the cam shaft seals is much more complicated (expensive) with V V T engines.
Has anyone encountered/experienced this issue before and has some suggestions?

They are recommending replacing the alternator and timing belt because they are covered in oil. I'm not 100% sure how timing belt being covered in oil would effect its performance, but I leave it to them. The alternator being soaked makes more sense. But it all adds up to be quite expensive.

Car is going to be used in mountains where there is no cell reception, so I don't want to take any chances.

Thanks!

It happened to me. I was at first thinking is was the valve cover gasket but it was the passenger side camshaft seal. Ended up replacing it myself. Check my posts for info.
Thanks!
That was very helpful. Unfortunately I'm not nearly as deft and must rely on the mechanic. But glad this is a real problem and taking note of the other things you wished you had replaced.

ask the mechanic to show you what he is talking about.
he would have had to remove a cover to see the timing belt
not sure but, how would the oil get outside the timing belt area to get on the alternator?
the alternator is not anywhere driven or connected to the timing belt.

alternator covered in oil? wonder about the power steering hoses close by, there could be some leaks by the oil filter being flung all over the front of the engine.
